When I go to the support screen on the printer.  The sensor reads as 1 usually but will flicker to 0 every couple of seconds or so.  I can make it more dramatic just by jiggling the filament leading to the extruder. 

Try moving the cable bundle to the extruder around and see if that makes the readings flicker. You may have a broken wire that’s making intermittent contact, causing the failure.

If that’s not it, remove power and check the connections at both ends for a loose or disconnected wire or connector not firmly seated.

Hey! That was it. I checked the cable ends originally, of course nothing was found, but on my second look I chased down the cable and found a kink in the red wire.  Now with it replaced it works just as it should. Thank you for the help!

It has not.  I am still not sure what is causing it. I realize that I didn't actually put anything about the Y crashing.

So my printer's crash detection goes crazy quite frequently if I leave it on.  It started doing it 3 or 4 months after I started using it.  It usually starts find and normal, printing whatever it needs to.  but I'll say when the prints gets to about an inch tall it starts tripping the crash detection from the Y belt...a lot... current numbers are 31 X crashes, and 643 Y crashes.    The crashes continue through out the rest of the print is no discernable pattern.  it doesn't trip in the same spot on different layers,  it doesn't trip after a certain amount of time, sometimes it trips multiple times a layer, and some times not at all, and it doesn't matter how big or small the print is. It will trip completely randomly. To be honest I would almost be okay with it constantly tripping if it the crash didn't occationally cause either belts to slip, causing a layer shift, more or less ruining the print, which I think is just the printer failing to home and find the precise location where it left off.

I have stared at the print as it goes and trips, and cannot see anything wrong with it.  No breaks or separations or over extrusion boogers.  Belt tension is X at 263 and Y at 267, Which as I under stand it is fine for it to be set it.  I've replaced both X and Y belts just to be sure.  The bed and extruder slides back and forth smoothly without needing much force.  I've cleaned and re lubed the rods several times now. Checked the wires and connection points for the motors and board.  I haven't found anything that could be the cause.

I haven’t had any Y axis crashes myself so I can’t speak to this directly.

@ty-guerin - 

Have you tried re-flashing the firmware and doing a fresh XYZ calibration? Sometimes this can be helpful when frequent random crashes are happening. May be worth a try.
