Extruder Idler Rattling

I just assembled my kit and noticed a rattling sound when printing. I narrowed it down to the extruder idler. It seems to be rubbing somewhere, but I can't figure out where. If I take out the screw/spring and open it up, the noise stops. If I hold the door down so the idler moves when I move filament in and out, it makes the sound again. I don't see any wear on the printer part where it might be rubbing against. It isn't against the door,a as I can move it there all I want without the noise. It only happens when it is closed in with the x carriage. Any ideas?

Can you show us the extruder with the door open?
Are the gears on the idler and the motor drive wheel, lined up?
Is the motor drive wheel firmly attached to the motor shaft?

regards Joan.

Hi Joan.

The gears are lined up and the drive wheel is firmly attached. I tried to take some pictures as best I could.

is the idler bearing rod seated in both bosses of the cover and are both bearing inserts in place!

Yes and yes. If I manually move the idler with the door open, even if I try to put pressure towards the exterior of the door to simulate the pressure that it would have from filament in it, it doesn't make any noise and moves smoothly. That is what made me think it is rubbing on the carriage somewhere....or something else entirely is going on.

Grease the large teeth on the Bondtech gears, and reduce the tension you are applying to the filament (in most cases, a turn or three past spring contact is all that is needed).   Also, verify the driven gear set screw is centered on the motor shaft flat, not on the round.

You also might be having a simple nozzle jam issue -- extruder clicking is one of the symptoms.

RE: Extruder Idler Rattling

Hello all,  I just completed the build on my MK3S. Upon starting a print today when I got home I heard this sound that seems to be similar to the original posters comment.

I went back through the calibration wizard and did not hear the sound once (I thought it may have been the x carriage assembly)

As soon as I started a print job after completing the wizard the sound is still there. My tension screw is backed off as per reply only 1-2 turns after spring contact.

Attaching video as I would appreciate any assistance in resolving.

Thank you

Okay so I did a little more looking into this issue. Upon opening the idler gear cover I could hear the clicking sound louder but only when the stepper was moving (feeding/retracting).

I went into the settings and selected move axis and selected Extruder when rolling the knob forward and backward you can hear the click sound clearly .

I checked the grub screw and tightened it after again checking the alignment. The sound is a little less but still there.

I attached another video to this post which shows the gear and click sound when moving back and forth.

I am open to a way to resolve this as it is rather loud when printing.

Thank You.

When the extruder is moving faster on layer 2, are you seeing any missing extrusion? Gaps etc.?  If not, it sounds like you have the squeak many are reporting.

Some say they have trimmed the PTFE so it no longer touches the Bondtech gears, and this resolved the noise.

RE: Extruder Idler Rattling

Thank you for your reply. No, no missing extrusions. Prints are coming out great. First few prints there was no noise now day two of printing and the clicking started.

I am

going to see if I can check the PTFE tube and see if that resolves the issue.

Does it seem right that the PTFE tube could slide up a bit now causing the sound? (Asking as it did not seem to be there in my first couple of test prints; ie: Buddy and Star Gear)

Mine doesn't do it as much anymore but I still get it occasionally. Sometimes it sounds more like yours, like something is rattling. Reading tim-m30's comment though, I need to check the PTFE tube on mine. That makes sense that it would create that sound.
