Extruder cooling failure

I had a failure occur on me the other day where the extruder mounting melted and so my nozzle dropped downward and knocked the print off the bed and printed strings in the air for awhile. It was still going when I checked on it. I recently had rebuilt the printer due to a different sort of failure and went through about 1 kg of filiment before this failure.

My thought is that something went wrong with the extruder fan and it allowed the heat to creep up the extruder and melt the PET parts I printed. Is it worth sourcing some ABS or PC parts to replace the extruder holding components? Is there something wrong with the main board? The fan ran and runs still. I don't know if it's full speed or not.

Any suggestions would help, I'd love to get it up and running again ASAP. Thanks!
