Extruder clicking

Hello,

I have been using my prusa i3 mk3s for a couple weeks now and it gets good prints but there has always been this clicking sound coming from the extruder. I can't really figure out where it's coming from exactly on the extruder, but I was reading it might be the extruder motor. The motor gets pretty hot I am now realizing, which might be caused by the extruder skipping too much? Not really sure, hopefully the video helps explain the situation. The prints come out fine, so it hasn't really been an issue with print quality just worried about the noise leading to more of a catastrophic failure in the future. Let me know if you have any suggestions thanks!

Also I have the kit version of the printer.

I couldn't select the video from your link so I reposted it in an accessible link format in the post above, but I can't hear any sound when I download the video...

regards Joan

Hi Joan,

posted several times - can you summarize that? https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-hardware-firmware-and-software-help/extruder-clicking-5/#post-228608

@karl-herbert

Here is what you posted on my other post:

Hello and welcome in Prusaforum,

i think you print with PLA. This quickly softens at ambient temperatures above 30 degrees C., which can then lead to this extruder clicking. If you print in a enclosure, I would leave the door open. Otherwise you have to make sure that the extruder motor is cooled (active or passive). It may also be that the idler tension is too low or the filament transport is exposed to too much friction.

I apologize for creating multiple on accident I will hide the other one.

In regards to what you responded:
I do not have an enclosure, so it is getting plenty of airflow. Actually I am not sure that it is an extruder motor issue now as I moved the extruder assembly with my hand along the X-axis and was able to get a clicking sound again. The extruder prints absolutely fine, I have tried several nozzles (Vary sizes) and did a cold pull before each. So I am doubtful there is a jam of any kind or the extruder is struggling, since it will click when the printer is off. Something maybe is just loose in the extruder? again not sure, if you have any ideas they are appreciated.

This is hopefully a better video for hearing the clicking. It seems to happen when the x axis moves. It isn't an issue now, but I worry it might be one or something.
