Extruder/Carriage Whining Noise

Hi everyone, I just received my mk3s a few days ago and have enjoyed it a lot! Yesterday when I changed the filament, it got stuck so I had to manually unload it by taking out the idler screw. No big deal. I put my new filament in (matter hackers pro PLA) and tightened the idler screw, but it makes this whining noise when it does short movement/retractions. I have included an audio file to hear what it sounds like. Any suggestions?? Is my idler screw too tight? Too loose? https://forum.prusa3d.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Marina-Dr.m4a

Hi!

I have THE SAME issue on my mk3s. I've allredy checked the idler. I've read that someone had same problem, and solved it by drilling the filament input hole. I've not checked that yet. Did you solved this problem? BTW, Your audio is just as i was standing next to my mk3s 😛

Best regards

RE: Extruder/Carriage Whining

Hi,

Mine is also whining. Happened all of a sudden after putting a new filament in. Part looks ok about 4 hours into print, but the whine is a new thing. Not sure why. Using Fillamentum PLA, lots of short movements. Have no idea if that's relevant. But the docs is exactly the same as your audio recording. Haven't done any root cause work yet as my print is in process.

RE: Extruder/Carriage Whining Noise

Are you referring to that squeaking type noise heard in the clip? If so, mine has done that too. I spent hours trying to figure out why my extruder/idler was squeaking; even made a post in these forums ( https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-hardware-firmware-and-software-help/experiencing-e-axis-squeaking-in-only-certain-xy-directions/ ).

At this point I'm convinced that it was the filament. It only ever occurred with one roll/brand of filament I bought, and hasn't happened since I finished that roll. I've also heard that some filaments are just squeakier than others. I'm currently running Hatchbox PLA, and haven't had any issues with black or gray.

I'd suggest confirming the squeak doesn't happen with all filaments, and that should at least prove that it's not something "wrong" with your machine.

Hi at all, I have exactly the same issue. Changed from Prusament PLA to DasFilament PLA due to Prusament is nearly out of stock. Since then, I have that whining noise too (much more than you have). The tension of the screw from the bondtech is OK and within the values in the manual. Don´t know what to do either.

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem. I'm also using PLA from "DasFilament".

Since this post is from April: Could you solve your problem?
I'll try switching back to Prusament and will report my results here.

Hi, I'd check if the PTFE tube alignement (step 30 in the E-axis assembly manual) and if the extruder idler is correctly aligned.

Make sure the Bondtech is not biting the PTFE tube (maybe it is a little up after you manually unload the filament). If that is the case, you should take out the hotend and put it back in the right position.

Just my two cents.

Regards

Ramiro
