Error MAXTEMP when printing PCCF

Hello Community,

i recently received my preassembled & tested I3 Mk3s+ along with some PCCF Material which i mainly want to use. I changed the nozzle for an Olsson Ruby and started printing with the preset settings from Prusa Slicer for PCCF @ 285°. Print was smooth until the last few layers where the Printer showed the MAXTEMP error along with the siren.

I thought maybe the AC caused it, printed again - no issues, print went through. Today, i started printing again, MAXTEMP error twice after 2 layers of a very small print.

I checked around, no creasing, noticable defects around the Thermistor. Also during printing, the Temperature monitoring on the screen doesnt spike or go off, it stays within a reasonable measurement.

I unplugged it while room temp, measured with a multimeter and the resistance was normal, i also moved the cable around during measuring and no changes.

Now im printing PLA @ 220° and no errors.

What could cause this? i know the MAXTEMP error ocurrs when the thermistor exceeds 305° but that did not display, or rather the temp didnt really go over 288°.
Could AC in a room really cause the thermistor or rather the PID heating to malfunction and produce MAXTEMP errors constantly? i dont know what else to try.

Thanks in advance.

cheers felix

Hi Felix,
Maxtemp can be caused by a thermistor shortcircuit... check where the wires come out of the Heater bulb

Hi Joan, yes i did check along the wire coming from the hotend, i dont see any damage or anything out of the ordinary, also when i was measuring resistance at the molex connector at room temp i wiggled the cable, moved the head and generally tried to move the cable and connection around - no change in resistance or shorts.

I also managed a full 3h print with PLA@220° with no errors, meaning if the thermistor would short sometimes during head movement if should short regardless of temp right?

I dont really understand why the MAXTEMP gets triggered when printing at 285° - thats my issue

285 is near the top of the range,
You could try doing a PID tune at that temperature to reduce the chnces of the heater cycling too high and causing a genuine maxtemp indication.

Have exactly the same issue. Do you find the problem? Kind regards

RE: Error MAXTEMP when printing PCCF

Hey all,

i was out the past week and couldnt test it yet. I will try a PID tune at 285 but i did one before @220 and am not very hopeful that this is the issue.

I also might try printing at 270° instead of 285° if it still works and leave some findings if i learn anything else. Is there any way to tell the printer to be "less" sensitive to temp spikes when printing @285°? I know it would mean custom firmware but i think just printing 20° below max should not cause such issues - especially since the thermistor clearly works and would alert when overheating anyways.
Basically increasing max temp limit by 10° could solve it or include a timer for how long over temp has to occur to cause maxtemp.

Thanks still,

Feilx

Update:
Today i got a full print down, 33 minutes @ 275°C all good. Ran a PID cal. at 280 before.

Ill see if the MAXTEMP occurs again.

Thanks so far,

Felix

RE: Error MAXTEMP when printing PCCF

Hi Felix! As mentioned, I had the same issue. Had two days with the support team testing everything possible. Without success. At the end I will get a new board.

To print under the standard for this material is not the solution. I would highly recomment you to push to a board exchange.

On my other MK3 I already printed more than 15kg PCCF at standard settings without an issue

Kind regards

Thanks for the answer - in this case its pretty obvious since you ran through a lot of material beforehand!
Youre right, its just a fix and not the solution - doesnt make sense to me that the thermistor works normally, no faults or shorts and still prints produce errors.

Could you maybe send me the Support Ticket number so i can send a mail to support? Just so i can reference this in case.

Thanks,

Felix

RE: Error MAXTEMP when printing PCCF

I'm experiencing a similar problem.   I've tried 5 times to print the same model in PCCF and it fails in a similar area.   The last time I watched the temp instantly spike from 270 (I had lowered the temp) to 329 and trigger a max temp situation.   Instantly.   I have tried the PID calibration, printing at lower temps than 285, etc.    No luck.

Its really strange that all the prints are failing in a similar spot?

I'm now trying the same model print with PLA.   I suspect it will be successful.    I have a new thermister on order in case that is the cause.

Did anyone above make further progress on this issue?

Colin

The answer is quite simple. It's the same spot because the is an overhang to print. The part cooling fan turns on and this leads into this error. solution: silicon sock.

RE: Error MAXTEMP when printing PCCF

I ended up upgrading my firmware from 3.11.0 to the latest beta / release candidate 3.12 RC1 and the problem went away.   I'll check out a silicon sock as well.
