My suggestion would be to use Raspberry Pi + any phone or web app for remote access. In this case you're not limited to one meter and can use pause or stop whatever is required.

Because you're mentioning "emergency stop": Pausing a print is not an emergency situation. As the printer will still try to finish the move and is still getting power, doing something terrible wrong which you're trying to stop. For this case I would cut the power off. A simple couple meter power strip cable should do the trick. There is a button and it will definitely prevent from any actions the printer is doing right now.

Oldish topic but I wonder if there's a way to wire up a real life E-stop button that will cut power to the heaters and motors, or if anybody has done such a thing.

What would be the simplest, fastest way to cut power to the motors? A button wired parallel to the reset button on the control pad, maybe?

I work with a lot of industrial machinery, and it seems to me that if everything's not in a case, there should at least be a header for a user to hook up an e-stop button.

So far I've seen the industrial e-stop is always to cut off the power to the device (big red button). If you want the same thing, then you have to wire it accordingly before the PSU.

If you just want a soft stop, then use reset button or take the reset line from the board and pull high at any other place.

Seems like reset would work for my MK3 and have the right effect. But an E-stop is *not* a power cutoff to the whole device, but to potentially dangerous components.

I still think non-enclosed 3D printers should have e-stops or at least headers for them.

It‘s a matter of definition. Heaters could cause fire, motors could do a lot of physical harm. There are not much components left to still keep the power on. So why exactly do you want more complex logic on the board? The reset button is at the front, power off button on the side. Both are easily accessible.

There are enough solution proposed here. Why don‘t you just pick one which suits best for you? If it‘s only „yes, but it should post ....“ then please let me know. I‘m out then.

Yes of course cutting power will stop everything 🙂

It's clear that the answer is no: there's no provision for a proper e-stop button. I'll see about hacking one into my MK3.
