Clicking noise on the printer

I have had this issue with a printer for quite some time now, the clicking noise.

I have found that sometime after the start of a print, the extruder starts clicking a little bit, and as the noise increases, the hotend eventually stops extruding filament. The printer is still working on its toolpath but there is no filament extruded.

Every time I try to fix this issue I find that the hotend is not clogged, but the filament is excessively chewed by the gears.

My solution till now was to take the extruder apart, clean the grinded pla around the gears, and readjust the screw for the idler, without tensioning it much.

It might work for a short print but after a few hours the printer starts to show the same problem.

what am I doing wrong? any clue? many thanks

Either your idler tension is not right or the filament does not move freely (either inside the extruder or before).

Adjust your tension screw according to https://help.prusa3d.com/article/idler-screw-tension_177367

Use stock spool holder and make sure the filament is not entangled somewhere. To do that: take off a dozen or so windings to the side of the spool until you are sure the next windings are not entangled and rewind the filament on the spool by turning the spool. Make sure you never to let go of the end, if you do: repeat.

Check extruder PTFE is not damaged and inserted correctly https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/how-to-replace-a-hotend-ptfe-tube-mk3s-mk3s-mk2-5s-mmu2s_21664

Make sure your nozzle is not (partially) clogged https://help.prusa3d.com/article/clogged-nozzle-hotend-mk3s-mk2-5s_2008

hi Robin, thank you

i think it was indeed the tensions of the screws.

it took me a few attempts to get it to work properly
