RE: Bearings of new MK3S+ leaking

@shane-3

Hi Shane,
I believe the material in the bag / bearings, is antirust not proper lubricant.
(as mentioned by Misumi, in their installation instructions.) and the fact that it is dripping onto the build plate means that it is not staying in the bearings.  If you feel lucky you might try adding some grease on the rails but this might run into problems with dissimilar chemistry reacting together.    Sripping the bearings out dissolving the antirust in IPA and drying the bearings then greasing and restoring the bearings may be your best bet.

regards Joan

Your choice Shane,
https://us.misumi-ec.com/pdf/fa/2012/p1_0265.pdf
this PDF says that the transport rust preventative fluid should be replaces by grease.

Follow my instruction on the first page. Your bearing are not properly lubricated and you will shorted their life and start to damage your rods if they are not properly lubricated.

Piling on - if you did NOT clean and pack the bearings with grease, well, it's one of those Buyer-Beware things.  Bearings ship in a very light NOT-FOR-USE rust resistant oil. They must be cleaned and then greased with a suitable lubricant. Misumi recommends a white lithium, some use teflon filled synthetic, others general machine oil. Depends on how often you want to do maintenance.

Help with new build - I ruined my bearings?

I took the advice and used an ultrasonic cleaner with alcohol, and then lubed them up with Super Lube.  However, the bearings are very rough now and I can't figure out why.  I didn't check them before cleaning, and now I can't imagine using them all rough like this.  Anyone ever have that happen?

You also have to make sure that the bearings are properly aligned and don't tilt. With the U-bracket Varainte you have to make sure that the screws are not tightened too strong. You may also have gotten a bad batch of LMU8 bearings. In this case, I would contact the Prusachat.

Clean and grease bearings is ok and I would continue to do so 👍

wbr,

Karl

maybe thats why they dont suggest lubricating the bearings during assembly...every 2nd owner will make a post about the bearings dripping on their prints.

the oil on the bearings is only corrosion protection, it is not a suitable lubricant when the bearings are used - it is way to thin. stuff the bearings with grease (use the lube prusa supplies if you want to), squezze it carefully into the races with one of the rods. according to misumi the oil doesnt need to be removed.

during the first few hours of use excessive grease will make its way out of the bearings, wipe it off before it drips.

I would report any defect and a detailed description to the Prusachat. If the linear bearings or guide shafts are damaged, they will certainly be replaced by Prusa.
