What happens if I remove the SD card halfway through a print?

What would happen if I remove the SD card halfway through a print?

Or, in other words, does the Prusa MK3S store the gcode of what it's printing into memory, or does it need to read the SD card all the time?

Sometimes I want to store some new designs in the SD card, but it is halfway through a long print, so I'm not sure what to do.

Many thanks.

The file is read line-by-line. There is no buffer space for more than a few lines on the controller board. It would likely just stop. Check out OctoPrint if you want to be able to load up new prints as one is in progress. Something like a FlashAir SD card works as well, but costs as much as an OctoPrint setup if you can still find them.

If you print via Octoprint, you do not need an SD card. A Pi 3B+ for example is not expensive, easy to install and more than sufficient for data traffic.

I'm definitely intrigued by Octoprint. However, I pretty much just started printing, so probably I will have to wait a few months to make any improvements/enhancements to my setup (or the wife will complain on me yet again spending more money on 3d printing).

It looks amazing though. I would really love to get the webcam and do timelapses and having full control on my mobile, so I don't have to set up timers to remind me when a colour change is coming.

I have never used sneakernet (had OctoPrint running while wait for printer delivery), it must be pain if you change you mind as often as I do, just before everything gets up to temp.

More points to Octoprint...

SD card works well, but having full control wirelessly even over the internet... So tempting... Although also so unnecessary, and my wife is also an engineer like me, so she will know that I don't really need Octoprint, just more self-discipline.

"she will know that I don't really need Octoprint" Oh but you do. It's a tiny amount of money compared to the price of the printer.

Then she will also appreciate that there is a more elegant way of doing it, even if more complicated. Get her involved. Make it part of a larger home automation project (you know, to avoid that arduous turning on and off of lights). Then you can 3D print little enclosures for all the IoT gizmos.

Engineers are easily distracted.

"Engineers are easily distracted. "  Shiny expensive objects usually do the trick.
