What components are Key to purchase with a new MK3S+ ?

Hi,

I'm an Australian and about to purchase my first Prusa (first any) 3D printer.

What should I be buying with it that I am likely to need for maintenance, common activities, replacement or different printing styles etc?
Is there a definitive list of items for maintenance, parts likely to break etc?

I figure if I'm dealing with the extended shipping times, I should think ahead 🙂

Also, I am going to be shafted with the "customs handling fee" anyway... I may as well grab the extra items now (or at least in a second package under the customs threshold 😛 )

I would suggest hot end thermistor and heater, at some time you will get a blob of doom, and these parts are often damaged during corrective action,

different build plates for different bottom textures.

Filament!

additional SD Cards 32GB or smaller. (So you can set up the next print and just change cards)
Or Raspberry pi and Octoprint setup! this allows you to send print files across the home network.

If you have ordered a kit, consider getting an M3 tap, to clear the pint out of the screw holes on the main aluminium frame

Vernier calliper, for measuring during design work.

THanks Joan :).

Filament.... yeah I need to learn more about that so I can determine which type (more so than colours to start with).

Absolutely a spare heater and thermistor and a nozzle.  A blob of death can also bend the heat break and gum up the screws that secure the heater and thermistor.  So, essentially, I would just get a spare hotend to have all the parts on hand.  It's nice to have a larger nozzle like a 0.6mm for faster prints and a 0.25mm for small prints with fine detail.

Otherwise, Prusa gives you adequate spare parts with the kit.

I would get at least two build plates... a smooth PEI one and either a textured or satin one.  The textured produces a well-textured finish on the bottom of the print, the satin produces a fairly smooth matte finish.  I find that smooth PEI has better adhesion, too much for PETG.

For  filament brand, you can't beat Prusament.  But most filaments are OK nowadays.

PLA is considered the easiest to print, is quite strong, but isn't great for heat resistance, it does not like sitting in the sun on a hot day.

PETG is almost as easy to use and is more heat resistant. Difficult to paint or glue though.

Other filaments can be tricky to print, even on a Prusa. My favorite tricky ones are ASA and Polycarbonate.

Happy Printing!

I see the spare parts kit is out of stock as are a lot of the spares. Is that common? I guess more people are printing with COVID and supply chains are struggling...
