Unusual whooshing sound while printing
I'm encountering an odd whooshing sound while printing. I've had this printer for several years and never heard this before. It seems to occur, sometimes but not always, when the print head is moving left or right. The fans look to be running fine. I can't seem to isolate where the sound is coming from or what causes it to only happen some times. It doesn't seem to be affecting the quality of the prints, which is good, but the sound has me worried.
I've attached a short video. It makes the normal sounds but also sometimes the slight whooshing sound.
Hmm, the attachment doesn't seem to work when it's a video file. Here's a link to it on YouTube.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing it, whether it's something to be concerned about, something earing out?
RE: Unusual whooshing sound while printing
To help isolate the noise I would notice if it does it with the part cooling fan off or not. If it's not the parts fan, I would try to replicate it by activating the X axis during cooldown while the hotend fan is still running. If it can be replicated, then wait until it stops and move the X axis again.
If it can't be replicated unless a print is running, then I would gently touch the hub of one fan, then the other to see if that dampens the noise. If you accidentally stop the fan, it will probably shut down the printer and ruin the print, so don't try this near the end of a 10 hour print!
My suspicion is the hotend fan becoming sensitive to side loads due to inertia or maybe debris in the motor? Or maybe the belt idler?

RE: Unusual whooshing sound while printing
What I think is your 'whoosh' sounds typical of the sounds mine makes when doing a quick travel move in both the X and Y planes.
I'm assuming that you semi-regularly lube the rods and check the bolts of the mechanism and frame to be sure they are tight, correct?
What I might suggest is to re-slice the same print but dial down the 'travel speed for non-print moves' in PS and see if it becomes less annoying to you.
RE: Unusual whooshing sound while printing
Do you hear it when printing any model, or that particular one. Sometimes the air blowed by fan to printed wall can create a interesting sounds, which seem to me could be your case.

RE: Unusual whooshing sound while printing
I agree with Zoltan - it sounds like changes in the amount (and velocity) of print fan air being deflected back from the vertical surface of the print as the X axis traverses.
I have noticed the same effect on some of the things I have printed.
Cheers,
