Troiuble Loading Filament

So last nite I was in a print, and ran out of filament. The printer stopped and did not seem to pause the printer. But that is fine.

The trouble I am having now is that I cannot load new filament. I am using Hatchbox 1.75 mm PLA filament. I unloaded the last bit of filament. Heated up the nozzle. And no matter what I try the autoloading of the filament is not working. Though I occasionally hear a beep, the filament never moves down and does not seem to be grabbed at all by the automatic filament feed.

I have tried multiple times to recut a angle for the filament and that doesn't seem to help.

Any help on the next steps for trouble shooting?

Thanks Phillip

Re: Troiuble Loading Filament

The autoload is dependent on the sensor working correctly. It should beep and then start the extruder to start pulling it in. If the sensor is not functioning correctly, you could try turning it off and then using the manual loading option.

if the gear door is tightened up all the way, mine takes a bit of force to push the filament in enough to grab.

Re: Troiuble Loading Filament

The bondtech inspection hatch screws should never be tightened right up!

without the filament my pressure screws are only just starting to compress the springs. (You can feel the resistance to turning the allen key increase as soon as the spring starts to compress. back the spring off and re advance until literally just touching the Spring)

when the filament is gripped by the bondtech gears, a little extra tension is caused by the thickness of the filament.

the only issue i get with loading filament is when the filament is tightly curled, it tends to catch on ledge inside the sensor housing
rather than passing through into the bondtech gears

if I straighten say 75mm of the filament end, it seems to feed much more reliably when loading.

Turn off the printer?
I have already done that and it does not seem to help.

Do you mean turn off the sensor?
How do I activate the manual loading option?

Thanks Phillip

Is there a particular method to straighten the filament?

Thanks

I just grip it between thumb and first two fingers and gently bend it straight.

I meant turn off the sensor. Once you turn off the sensor, the menu will replace the Autoload Filament option with a manual load option.

I just had to do this with a new spool of eSun black PETG. It initially loaded automatically, but I didn't even get the first purge line down before the sensor triggered and forced an unload. I then turn it off an manually loaded the filament. It's been printing for an hour now without a problem.

Settings > Fil Sensor [on/off]

Re: Troiuble Loading Filament

So manual loading does n work either. It really feels/seems like there is some filament stuck in the mechanism that it keeping new filament from loading.

I have tried the unloading filament, that did not seem to work.
The autoload sensor DOES sound off, and tried to load filament it just won't grab the new filament and feed it down. I can see the gears moving trying to pull down filament.

There is something hard I am definitely hitting with the filament, and I have tried two different rolls to see if that might do anything.

I did take of the top part and took a picture down and it certainly looks like there is something blocking new filament. But I am not sure how it is suppose to look, or to clear something like this.

Any further thoughts on where to go for troubleshooting or how to clear this?

What color was the filament you were using? In that picture it looks like silver, grey, white, or that is the inside of the PTFE tube.
The only real way to check for blockage would be to remove the hotend.

Try loosening up the bontech gears all the way- flip the little door open- manually insert filament into the extruder. If it does not insert **at least** 30mm from the top of the PTFE tube.... you have a clog. If it does, either your gears are misaligned or the top of the PTFE tube is not chamfered correctly.

Anything can be made better
