Thermal Runaway with OctoPrint

Prusa MK3S/MMU2S - 3.9.1 (1.0.6)
OctoPrint - Software

OctoPrint: 1.4.2
ipOnConnect: 0.2.4
PrinterAlerts: 0.7.4
TouchUI: 0.3.16

I have OctoPrint running on an Pi3 and has worked with not much issues. I updated the firmware on my Prusa and also updated the software on the OctoPrint.

Yesterday I went to reprint the last print just by pressing Go on the Touch UI. Everything was going well until it went way over temp and did a Thermal Runaway shutdown on the printer. It also set off my smoke alarm, had a burning paper smell and there was what looked like smoke marks on the extruder housing, printed plate, lower part of wires going to extruder. The marks could be vapor from the PETG getting so hot.

Looking to see if it's an issues with requesting "Reprint" from touch UI or maybe something else. I will be watching it closely for a while and may try to duplicate but will reset before it gets this hot again.

Wierd.  I have never seen this and have 16 printers on Octoprint.  Keep us updated.

I thought to as well. It might have been a fluke, but when I tried printing again this morning the thermistor is damaged and does not go above 150C, so now waiting on parts. Tried controlling with Pronterface and same results.

Are you using a touch screen with OctoPrint or just controlling from PC?

Where do you order your parts?  I order a lot from Amazon and stateside sellers to avoid shipping costs.

I am also relatively sure that this is a hardware failure. With high chances the hotend thermistor is defective or there are loose contacts or a short circuit. The thermistor should have an internal resistance of 100kohms at 25 degrees C. Check this and also the wires and connectors.
Did you change anything on the hardware after the update?
If the thermistor is ok, I would perform a printer factory reset.

I'm thinking more hardware as well. I will check the resistance and see what i have.

Concur - Hardware 100%.  If the temp reads zero, it is a thermistor.  If not, it is the thermistor or the einsy board.

Thermal runaway, mintemp or maxtemp errors are due to 99.9% of the hardware I would keep thermistors and cartridge heaters on reserve. Most of the time the wires break and cannot be soldered in the area of the heating block. It is also very likely that the wires get tired and break at some point inside the insulation due to the many movements.

Sorry, no hardware changes after or before software updated.

I checked the thermistor and it was 105 ohms and room temp is around 30c, so that was ok.  I reconnected and powered up. did a temperature set for PLA from control panel and it worked properly. So now running a small print to test everything.  Could have been a bad connection for the thermistor and it not reading the proper temperature.

This is the first real hardware issues I have had with this machine.  From working on printers, copies and all that office machine over the years issues after software updates always make you go HMMM......

Sample job worked properly,  I will keep my eye on it, the smoke alarm smelling the air.

Appreciate all the information and help.

105 ohms is far too little, should be 100 kohms. Have you checked the wires and connectors yet?

Oh sorry it was 105k ohms. It printed sample just fine, now testing larger print. This one is a few hours

ok. But then I would watch the printer closely and not let it print overnight for the time being.

good luck!

I concur with that.  I has one near first with an MK3s.  I have been hesitant to let them print unattended now.

Hopefully, you get long and successful printing before your next Thermistor issue.

Well almost, thinking it was a bad connection at the board now. Just glad it don't need the parts that I already ordered.   Oh well, I'll put them on the shelf and use them later.

I found this threat, because I have a similar Problem: Prints over 220 Degress goes somtimes good, but mostly not: get a instable Hotend Temperature, but the Display shows constantly 250 Degres, until I "smell" the heated PETG and a few secon later I got the Maxtemp Emergency stop, after a reset, I noticed the Temp was nearby 280 Degres. Thermistor: new, Hotend New, Bed new, all because I get this problem. the only thin: the PI 4 connected by USB....: could that really be a Problem? Did you still get some Problems? It's crazy.

RE: Thermal Runaway with OctoPrint

Don’t assume it is octoptint.  I did that recently and found that it was a faulty thermistor.
