Switched from black petg to white petg, keep getting black chunks hours later

I'm trying to figure out what is going on.  I mostly print with black petg but last night I was printing a box for an allsky camera and switched to white petg.

The first session had crash detection causing a rehome a couple times until I realized that chunks of black was causing issues with a good first layer.  I restarted the job and it did finish 8 hours later but I see spots where black filament is in the part hours later.

Educate me, where is that old filament hiding, how to I do a switch over from light to dark w/o the previous filament coming out at random.

Thanks,

Szumi

How to? Unload old filament, load new filament, keep on printing; that´s all there is and there should be no visible contamination with old filament. If you have dirt in your prints, check whether there is dirt sticking to the outside of the nozzle or heatblock which peels off over time...

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

What JustMe3D said. PETG is notorious for sticking to the nozzle and/or heater block. I tend to give them a good scrub with a soft wire brass brush while the printer is waiting to reach proper temperature.

I would add, that when switching from darker to lighter colors, I usually run two or three extra purge cycles (answer no when prompted if color is correct), or run a length of cleaning filament through it.

@szumi

It's possible that some of the black filament could be stuck in the teeth of your bondtech gears, even if its not visible on the gears, if you had periods where the gears were grinding on the filament that would leave particulate inside the feed area. When was the last time you cleaned the gears and feeder area?

@fuchsr advice is also good and I do the same.

I always make it a habit to purge thoroughly when switching from a darker filament to a lighter filament, and then brush off the nozzle with a soft wire brush right before each print.

'Boogers' of old and/or scorched filament may cling to the nozzle and break off at any time.

Now if the filament is leaking around the heat block, that's a more serious issue.

I prefer a nylon brush over a brass brush, to avoid accidentally creating an electrical short.

I don't think a nylon brush is going to do much. Provided you only brush the underside of the heatblock and the nozzle you will not cause a short.

Works sufficiently well for me. And even if the brass brush would work a tad better, the peace of mind of not having to be super-careful where to put the brush (and where not to) makes it totally worth it for me 🙂

Just run 8 inches or so of cleaner filament through it ~20°C hotter than whatever your previous filament was printing out. Done.

I didn't know they made cleaning filament.  I'll get some along with a brush to clean the body.

Me either, that's why I post the product name and maybe a link so they can at least see what the product looks like. e.g. I've tried to recommend Windex to folks here before, and not only did  they not initially know what Windex was, but they couldn't afford to get it in their country. So I try to keep that in mind when I suggest product. Also sometimes they don't feel comfortable clicking a link they don't know.

We don't have Windex here either afaik, but cheap, own brand, window cleaner from at least two UK supermarkets works OK.

Post and packing for a bottle of Windex would probably cost many times the product price.

Cheerio,

I'm in the USA.   The .to domain looks to be Tonga or someone in Toronto.  For whatever reason my ISP used .CC for my email which is the Cocos (Keeling) Islands near Australia.

That's really strange, because I'm in the US and my non affiliate linked URL's look like this.

https://www.amazon.com/eSUN-Cleaning-Filament-Extruders-Clogging/dp/B08RSCP95X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=GAHKGR4AR3WD&keywords=esun+cleaning+filament&qid=1656824109&sprefix=esun+cleaning%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-3

Let me know if it shows I'm in Zimbabwe.
