Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.0-beta

I miss the 0.35mm layer version in the new Slic3r!

Why was it removed?

Any hints how I should best create one? Copy the settings from Slic3rPE-1.39?

0.35 mm was replaced with 0.2 mm profile as it brings better results (higher quality and similar printing times). To explain the time, you can't push enough material through the 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.35 mm layer height at a given speed with adequate pressure, so you have to reduce the speed, therefore increasing the printing time, which is then similar as on 0.2 mm profile.

Also as written in this article for optimal printing results the layer height should be equal to the 50 % of the nozzle diameter, max is 80 %. Through the testing we came to the same conclusion.

Thank you for the explanation!

Do you know if the 0.2mm layer height is weaker than 0.3mm or 0.35mm layer heights? I was printing with 0.3mm layers to increase mechanical strength of surfboard fins, but I have not tested if it really makes a difference.

I haven't tested it, but it sounds very interesting to compare different layer height with respect to the final strength.

What system? Linux? I suppose you need to allow this port to be open by a non privileged application, or start Slic3r with su.

What system are you running on? Is there anything special about your network setup?

Interesting. I suppose we should test the very latest OctoPrint.

We rewrote the OctoPrint communication layer from Perl to C++, so there are significant changes. We tested the OctoPrint upload thoroughly though.

I‘m running an uptodate MacBook connected to a standard class c network, managed from a Fritzbox, all pretty standard.

Yes, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system.

I'll try if I can start the Appimage from a console as 'su'.

I really don't want to boot into Windows to update a fabulous open source machine! 😈

I think this should help you to allow access to the serial line for a non-root:

Re: Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.40.0-beta

Today I tried to switch from Simplify to Slic3er PE 1.4b. But I failed to understand Slic3ers extrusion width settings. In simplify I leave extrusion width to auto. So it will be calculated by simplify (usually nozzle dia * 1.2).

Usually I print a cube with just two shells. So if I set the extrusion multiplier correct the wall should be 2*0,4*1,2 = 0,96 mm (for 0,4 mm nozzle) thick.

Now when I set in Slic3er the extrusion multiplayer to the one I already calculated for simplify and leave the extrusion width settings on auto (which is 0). I get a cub with wallthickness of 0,84 mm.

It seems like Slic3er is using a different auto extrusion width than simplify. Why is that ? Or am I missing something different here ?

This may explain you some:

http://manual.slic3r.org/advanced/flow-math

Also we have a hint at the "Layers and perimeters" page of the Print profile, where you will get the recommended thin wall thickness values.

No. It is an unusual request. You can always extend the bed dimensions. And you can copy the printer profile to yours, where you would have the bed extended, and then once you are ready to print, you may switch to the original printer profile.

> But when I do try to use Slic3r PE I have a weird glitch. On my MacBook if I have the dock visible Slic3r will not go over the top of it. Basically as I open windows they all go over the dock like they should, but Slic3r sits behind it. So I have to manually go into my settings and hide the dock, or minimize
Slic3r. It is so annoying.

Is it this one?

Which OSX version? We really need as much details as possible, otherwise we are stumbling in the darkness.

Would you please create an issue for this?

i messed something up and lost all my settings from Slic3r 1.39.2 😥 😥 (the one that comes with prusa 2.1.5) Does anyone know where the config files are on a Mac?? I have an Apple time capsule, but need to find the file to recover...

Try your Library -> Application Support -> Slic3r

I see, thats a cool feature that slic3r is already calculating the wall thickness for 2 or 4 shells for me. I can use that to set the extrusion multiplier ...

One more question:

In the Print Settings/Advanced Slicer Tab for external perimeters it says:
set to "0": for default .. which is 1,05 * nozzle diameter I guess ?? (In the Slic3er manual for flow math it says (aka external perimeters) Slic3r will default to a thin extrusion width, equal to nozzle diameter * 1.05. )

"if set otherwise ..." 1,125 * nozzle diameter". <- I don't understand that. If I set the width to let's say 0,5 mm it will still calculate 1,125 * nozzle diameter ??

For some reason I had two different Application Support folders. All back to normal again 🙂

it was removed because it was slower than the 0.2 profile because at 200mm/s the filament demand is more than the v6 can output. So there are no advantages over 0.2

If you're printing multimaterial (in my case, with a Palette+), thicker layers have a huge advantage in dramatically reducing the number of filament changes and purges.

Fortunately it's not hard to make a custom profile with thicker layers. I hope thicker layers will return in the standard profiles once MMU2 is released.
