Print shifting to the right or left mid way through printing

In my last 25 or so prints I've had three that have shifted to the right or left mid way through the print.

Attached is a photo showing two of the prints, on the print on the left the arrows show where the shift happens.

What could be causing this?

Look at your stats - LCD menu - are you getting crash reports?

my settings said crash detection was OFF; I turned it on, tightened some bolts, and am running another print now.

Now I am getting several "Y Crash Detected" errors  - where the printer reset itself to the home position and then continues the print.

Common causes:

  • belt tension off
  • grub screws on motor shafts loose
  • nozzle hits infill (common with infills such as Grid)
  • nozzle hits curling overhangs
  • Model warped and nozzle hits raised area

... and possibly a jammed or failing 'Y' idler bearing.

It could be those things, but I found this post re frequent y axis crashes - and it seemed to apply to my case:

Here is a note I posted to the thread just now:

I'm having this problem too - using PTEG for a cylindrical model.   I tried a variety of the suggestions above, but none worked for me.  However, I then put my gcode thru this OctoPrint addon   https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/arc_welder/  and the issue seems to have gone away for the print I am printing now (however, the first layer looks rough).  In any case, in my case, I think it may be slicer related.  I am currently using PRUSA Slicer 2.7.4+ Windows.

as an update, I am still getting crashes but far far fewer than before.

Work through @fuchsr's list then, if the problem persists, show us the underside of a failed print.

You should aim for better than that. The other thing is, I would disable crash detection, which I have done on all my printers. I find it to be too sensitive and produce too many "false alerts"

@fucher

I agree, I have since turned off crash protection and my prints are at least finishing.

However, I'm thinking more and more its the model, and as there seems to be one spot that the print was always crashing (over multiple prints) with crash detection was turned on.

Here by the way is the 3D model for the print:

I have a MK3S, but if anyone prints this using PTEG on a MK4 I would be interested to know if they had any issues.
