RE: PETG wear on PEI Sheet

@graham25fox

The smooth plates are often difficult with some PETGs and acetone is probably not the reason.

RE: PETG wear on PEI Sheet

Just a quick note on terminology.

"Powder coat" is a process, not a material. There are many different materials that can be applied with the powder coating process, some are susceptible to petrochemical solvents, some not. Don't assume that because it is safe or not to use acetone on one powder coated finish that it is so for others.

It is safe to say, based on Prusa, who commissions the manufacture and QC of the bed sheets that they sell and have determined the properties they require, that acetone is unacceptable for use on the textured bed sheets. Use at your own risk and be prepared to buy either a replacement, or an aftermarket film to apply. There was a lot of back-and-forth between Prusa and their supplier prior to the launch of the textured sheets where QC and suitable properties were hashed out; many false starts and many samples sent back. Proper care can maximize the life of it, but as someone above said, it can be considered a wear-out item.

True, but it's clear that here we're talking about Prusa PEI sheets, so second half of your post is quite true.

@protoncek

It was a response to "I use powder coat, and it behaves like this"

Just trying to keep people away from assumptions.

True.  Smooth PEI sticker plates seem to have similar adherence.  The PEI textured plates are much more variable.

RE: PETG wear on PEI Sheet

I've also experienced the PEI bubbling and sheet wear when printing lots of PETG, even with the bed much further from the nozzle than for PLA. However, recently I heard (forget where), that if you add some hair spray, it actually acts as a release agent. I tried it, I spray some hair spray on a paper towel and wipe it on the PEI sheet before each print, and voila, the PETG can be pulled off nice and easy after each print. Sure seems counter intuitive to add more adhesion in order to get less adhesion. But it seems to work so far. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
