Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

OK im confused hear, I have a MK3 and I purchased a MMU2 which I received months ago but I have never built it, waiting for the dust to settle a bit,,, I do not want to print the parts myself I want to purchase the plastic bits,, can I do that OR do I have to purchase

https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/898-original-prusa-i3-mk3-to-mk3s-upgrade-kit.html #

Mk3 to MK3S

I checked my account I have no vouchers, but cant see the MMU2s upgrade bits???

any help appreciated.

In the link you posted to the purchase page for the upgrade there is a drop down under the 'quantity' box on the right which lets you choose self printed parts or prusa printed parts for a bit more money.

Prusa posted on Thursday, February 12th

" every current owner of MMU2 will be getting the upgrade to the MMU2S (self-printed parts for the extruder upgrade) for free no matter where in the world you are."

"To summarize everything, with MMU2S you will get the new MK3S/MK2.5S extruder parts (with new filament sensor) and the new filament buffer. The MMU2 unit is remaining the same as most of the problems were elsewhere. And yes, if it isn’t clear from the previous lines: when you have an MK3 or MK2.5 and order the MMU2S, you are getting the MK3S/MK2.5S upgrade along with it as well! In other words – MMU2S is MMU2 + MK3S/MK2.5S upgrade + filament buffer.
We are still waiting for some parts, but we will be able to start shipping the MMU2S over the course of next week. And once more – ALL MMU2 users will get vouchers for this upgrade FOR FREE by the end of this week."

"this week" is over and no voucher here. Anyone received a voucher?

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

As I understood the MK3 needs an upgrade as well, before it can use the MMU2S?
I did order the MMU2-Original on the 21st january but since it hasn´t been shipped yet, what do I get now ?
Doesn´t make much sense to me to get an outdated version if there is an improved version :-/
Doesn´t matter if I need to pay those 19,99 EUR more I just want to know if I have to or if I automatically get the MMU2S.

No voucher here either.
It needs to be made crystal clear. However my understanding is that mmu2S is a bit of a misnomer. It's the same mmu2, no changes (other than a filament detangling box). An mmu2s is what an mmu2 is called when paired with a mk3s.

My feeling is that the main purpose of prusa modifying the filament sensor on the mk3 is purely so it can be used to improve the mmu2 experience. Then they thought, "what the hell, let's upgrade the whole extruder while we're at it to improve a few other things". THAT is why all mmu2 owners will get the mk3 extruder upgrade (mk3s) gratis. Well, you still have to print your new extruder parts.

There is also the modified filament sensor at the top of the extruder, which uses the same sensor as the Mk3S, but it is triggered by filament entering the Bondtech gears, using a lever on the idler door, rather than a lever with balls and magnets.

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

Hello 🙂

I am also a bit confused, sorry maybe you can help me please.
So i have a MK3 Kit (10/16/2017 Spiral Sleeves) and the MMU2.0 (05/08/2018) and made the extruder upgrade B6 to B7 that comes with MMU2.
My MMU2 works fine so far no loading issues single and 5 colors.
So this is all i need for the next upgrade https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/898-original-prusa-i3-mk3-to-mk3s-upgrade-kit.html# right?

Thank you for your time and advise.

Honestly, if you have a working printer that you are happy with, just don't touch it.

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

I got my voucher BUT shop.prusa3d.com is so jammed up I cant complete the order. Even the live chat is dead.
Wait a min. it looks like the order page is starting to respond now,
never mind, it is back to spinning with the payment window greyed out. Last time I tried paypal , this time I am trying credit card.
Last time I gave up after a hour, I will let this spin for a while longer.
UPDATE 3rd time is the charm, I think
It was 2 1/2 hours since I tried the first time, but the order just went through, I think.
I used paypal again and it worked but there was a server error returning from paypal to prusa.
I did get a email confirmation from paypal & prusa, so I guess i am good to go

They are having some serious server or bandwidth problems right now. I've been trying to get my order in all morning and all I'm getting is timeouts and bad gateway errors. If everyone would stay off of prusa3d.com today until I get my order to process it would be greatly appreciated . 😉

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

Once I got past my learning curve I've been very happy with my MK3 / MMU2. Except for when I print multi material/color. Too often I wind up with a kink in the looped filament or when it is retracted it won't loop, instead pushing back to the spool and falling off. Which results in a kink. If I could just get past those kinks I'd be so happy.
What I'm looking forward to more than anything is that Filament Buffer, or what someone here called a "Filament Detangling Box". I need that. Where are the STL files for that? I've been printing the Extruder parts, but don't see any parts that will build the Filament Buffer.

I got my voucher and have already submitted my order.

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!

Got my voucher Feb 16th but server was messed up till Feb 18th. On the 18th couldn't get page to work even though server seemed to be working. Fix was to delete the cart and restart the process from the email.

So now I'm on the indefinite back order! 😀 Reminds me of the MMU2 and the MK3 back orders, sometimes the anticipation is more fun than the arrival ! (well true with the MMU2 anyway)

Love my PRUSA so these are just some random thoughts.
1. I'll be printing the parts, should I wait until the other parts arrive? Will the parts be rev 5 by then?
2. I don't see how the rev 4 parts are going to accommodate the sensor tensioner door thing. Wonder how the sensor is going to work when the filament is ground down.
3. The picture with the giant test blocks was very interesting. However in my limited tests the most problems come with small speckled parts with dabs of color and lots of filament humping in and out .... that heats up things and causes grind spots and jams ...
4. Im' thinking of LEDS lights mounted on the bottom cause I like watching the printing.

1) I doubt rev 5 will be out that soon. They'll get rev 4 in the field for a while and get feedback before the next rev.
2) I could be wrong about this but It looks like a ball bearing will be rolling against the filament. Then the lever that passes through the IR sensor will be pushed against the ball bearing with magnets.
3) I've the same experience when printing only small amounts of a color per layer. The cumulative filament grinding eventually causes a MMU feed failure. With this new design it will detect when the filament reaches the bondtech gears and engage the MMU2 idler before it grinds. At least that is the theory I believe.

Are the vouchers being sent out in one big bang or are they doing a rolling send out as parts are available?

2) I could be wrong about this but It looks like a ball bearing will be rolling against the filament. Then the lever that passes through the IR sensor will be pushed against the ball bearing with magnets.

Yes, that's it. The ball bearing pushes is attached to a swivel, and the arm of the swivel seems to be detected by the IR sensor. So the sensor will not detect movement, just actuation of the door. So anything passing through, no matter how mangled.. if it fits through the sensor assembly, it will trigger. The door is normally kept closed, and therefore the bearing pushed in, by the repelling magnets.

If an MMU2 filament change cycle starts, and a filament is unloaded, since there is no object there to push the bearing, the repelling magnets will push the the arm of the actuator inward, moving the bearing into the filament gap, and the arm away from the IR sensor. Untriggering the sensor.

The reverse happens when a filament is pushed into and through the sensor.

My feeling is the field strength of those magnets will be somewhat critical. If they're too strong, then it will require some force to push through the bearing, opening the gate. If this were the case, super soft filaments could bend rather than be pushed through. At that stage of loading, or course, the only force on the filament is a push from the MMU2.. once it reaches the extruder, there is also a pull. Happy days.

One would hope there's a capability to manually open the sensor to allow a filament that's stuck at the sensor door though.

Yes, that's it. It's detection of the ball bearing. I don't think it's movement, just proximity. So anything passing through, no matter how mangled.. if it fits through the sensor assembly, it will trigger. At least in theory.
If an MMU2 filament change cycle starts, the bearing should fall away/untrigger the IR sensor during unloading, and retrigger it during loading. The printer will more or less know something is up, and what. Presumably if something is up, it will alert the user.

You should find that the MMU2S does not use balls and magnets 😉

From the blog:

with this mod, the filament sensor detects when the idler doors open a bit as the filament pushes Bondtechs apart.

The idler door has an arm extending upwards which interacts with the IR sensor placed above and to the right of the extruder body filament entry point.
