Hi Chris,

you're in good company... the laser Filament sensor doesn't like them either Lol...

:). i swear something about whatever makes it shiny makes it melt oddly. at least shiny PLA

think on average shinny PLA needs more heat?

The filament sensor definitely does not line shiny filaments.

I wonder if they could have used a diffract color light for the sensor, maybe one that doesn't reflect so much

Wouldn't a micro switch be much easier? I think I even read somebody here has already done the mod.

I would think a micro switch with a 1.7 mm throw would be a PITA to get positioned just right. I noticed they did not go with an optical sensor on MMU2. That uses a ball bearing and PINDA, probably more reliable than the optical, but still feels overly complicated. An idler + encoder might do the trick.

When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"

There are 3 ball bearing sensor mods on Thingiverse (mine is the Zaribo one) that explore ways to make the laser sensor 100% reliable regardless of filament color or type. I have been having great success with mine.

A micro switch would not be able to ascertain if the filament is moving, though. That was why they went with an optical sensor.

Thanks for putting all of these in one place.
I started with the jltx design, but couldn't get my firmware to work. I didn't realize there were 3 instances of the needed change.
I went with the second option and it just worked, but the threaded cap on top was a weak point. After the second one broke, I looked into the first option again. Success!

Both options work wonderfully when built/configured correctly.
Note to anyone considering these: Make sure that anything near the internal bearing (screw, PTFE) is fully seated. That'll screw with ya. Or so I've heard 😀

Next time I work on my extruder, I may try your option. I know I'll have the part printed and ready to go, just in case. 👍

Glad to hear you got it working! The credit all goes to jltx for the original design. If you do for the zaribo one I made, you can use the exact same firmware you just compiled and no pesky mini ptfe tube is needed anymore because of the zaribo design.

Well, you can't have everything 😆

You can with the bearing indirect sensor mods!
