Filaments from other companies

Hello, does the Original Prusa i3 MK3S kit printer work well with filaments from other companies?

I use Materio3D PLA, and everything is good.

I've been using Hatchbox, Solutech, plus a few other brands without a problem.

Yes. this is one of the plus points of the Prusa printers, you can use a wide variety of filaments of different material and different manufacturers, but if you are just starting, you should get at least a couple of PRUSA PLA filaments to use as a baseline for initial setup and getting that initial warm happy feeling when your first prints come out successful since not all filament is the same from different manufacturers and you might be disappointed with the printer if you happen to start with an inferior filament.

You will always need some PLA for first layer calibration and getting your live-z dialled in when you update the firmware, or change a nozzle or change parts etc, so you may as well use PRUSA filament with PRUSA settings as these work and you don't have to waste time and filament trying to get a good print.

With other manufacturers you may have to adjust temperatures and or speeds and or many other possible tweaks to get ideal prints, but with a baseline filament (PRUSA PLA), you can do a test print and rule out any issue with the actual printer before continuing to dial in ideal prints from a n other filament. To be honest, most filament work well, but sometimes you come across a cheap filament that you buy, and it never seems to print perfectly, but sometimes you can find another reel of the same cheap filament that prints perfectly. Turns out it is cheap for a reason!.

PRUSA tend to do more rigorous testing and QC on their filaments and reject what does not pass, hence the higher price, but you do get a better consistency between reels.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Yes. Slicer settings can be adjusted for other manufacturers filament and specification. A spool of filament should come with settings, or available on their website. I use Rigid Ink and 3D Filaprint  mostly in the UK and get great prints.

I've printed at least 10 of cheapest brands of plastic on Amazon and use the default Prusa and Generic PLA settings and have yet to have any print problems that I can blame on the different spool manufacturers.

MK2/MK3 have All metal E3D-v6 HotEnd. I think it's still on of the best on market. You can print a pretty big variety of  plastic types and there is no brand lock. As long as the filament diameter is in range and required temperature is under 300C (I know you can go higher), you can feed/print whatever you want.

Haven't run into too many problems with different brands. Modifying temp is usually all that needs to be done. My favorites are Prusament and Atomic. Atomic has a great selection.
