Wavy brim edge

Hi,

I have an i3 MK3S+ machine built from a kit just over 2 years ago, which has started to miss-behave when printing brims. It will start off ok, but after about 5 passes looks like it is beginning to lay down PLA in splodges. By the time it gets to the last pass, the fault is so significant the brim edge has become quite wavy, and gets caught under the model's 1st layer. For a circular brim, about 3/4ths of the edge is wavy, with just 1/4 being normal. This happens anywhere on the builtplate.

I have serviced the extruder Bondtech gears and bearings without improvement, also checking all screws for tightness. I have also cleaned the brass nozzle with the acupuncture needle, which seemed to improve things, but now the problem is back again. This seems to have started after I had a partial nozzle blockage, which caused the extruder stepper to make a characteristic clicking noise. A thorough cleaning cleared that, along with a lot of filament feeding through.

Once the printer has progressed to the following layers, the printing is fine.

This is the first trouble I have had after over 2 years of regular use, and would much appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this.

With best regards, Paul.

RE: Wavy brim edge

Hi Paul,
the Brim should be firmly attached to the Build plate,  over a period of time finger grease tends to build up on the build plate and reduce adhesion... have you tried washing the build plate with a touch of dish soap and HOT Water, then rinse well with hot water, and dry immediately with paper towels (Both sides), then return the build plate to the printer and try printing again...

Obviously the first layer height needs to be good too... could nozzle wear have reduced the 'Squish' on the first layer?

regards Joan
