TMC DRIVER OVERTEMP when rotating knob while SD card is inserted

I assembled my printer and the self test and calibration went fine. Then I put in the SD card and rotated the knob and got that error. I reset the printer and the same thing happened. If I take out the SD card and go through the different menus, then I don't get the error. If I put the SD card back in and rotate the knob, I get the error. But I found that if I rotate the knob very slowly, the error won't come up, and I was able to print an object which printed fine.

What would be causing that?

Thank you 🙂

RE: TMC DRIVER OVERTEMP when rotating knob while SD card is inserted

Hi,

Same here.

I've posted TMC DRIVER OVERTEMP problem here :

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/tmc-drive-overtemp-durin-calibration-process/#post-341347

Prusa support send me another EINSY RAMBO card. I've reassembled the printer this week and the problem remains. Only yesterday I oberved thant TMC DRIVER OVERTEMP comes up when SD card is inserted and knob rotated, I wasn't aware about thar in previous process.

If this is a more wide observed problem I hope Prusa will find a solution quckly.

My drivers version is 3.9.2 (not yet updated after receiving the board)

Update after an exchange with Prusa Support :

I manged to calibrate the printer. Printing from SD card is currently impossible but it can be done through Pronterface ( https://www.pronterface.com/)

Printing was correctly done. No problem with the result. That seems to validate the printer assembly. And it seems that SD card reader / screen has some issues 🙁

I also was able to print perfectly fine through pronterface. And got in touch with support. They sent me a new LCD/SD unit but I still have the same issue as my original post with the new one.

Quick question,  sounds unrelated, but can't see this mentioned in either thread.

Have you tried reformatting the SD Card, or tried a different card, certain SD cards have been known to be temperamental, by the description of the fault probably nothing to do with it, but thought worth a mention.

Tank you very much!

Yeah I did. Sorry, I probably should've added more information to my post.

I've used 4 different SD Cards. My firmware is the latest version. I've checked the idle temperatures and running temperatures. And I double checked/rewired everything.

When I contacted support I showed them the issue through a video and how different SD cards gave the same error. And then they sent me the new LCD/SD unit.

Hi James,

I dont know how but before I received a new screen the problem we're talking about just vanished. Why ? I do not know. I'm now at more than 100h of printing time and I can use the knob with no issues. It vanished during a print without any action from me.

One curious thing : When the problem was still there I observed that there was 1 postion (3 o'clock) that was making the printer (with inserted SD card) booting directly into  OVERTEMP error. If I managed to stay out of this position when manipulating the knob : there were no problem.

RE: TMC DRIVER OVERTEMP when rotating knob while SD card is inserted

I had a quick look at this error.

From my recent reads of the install manual waiting on my MK3 to arrive I seem to remember the flex ribbon between pcb and lcd  is inserted inside the Alu extrusion to keep the cabling tidy, could this have damaged the insulation resulting in a short from the flex cable to the alu frame?

Also a tight cable tie around the cables could cause a short between cables, I would cut the zip ties off if tight and re-do them loose, also check your cable runs, inspect your cables, make sure there is nothing shorting anywhere, a short can come from the tiniest of breaks in cable insulation, believe me they can be very challenging to find as I work on huge 3 phase production printers with massive looms, have pulled my hair out with many a short which was a tiny hole in the insulation.

The manual does mention a short circuit as a possible cause of this error
