Texture surface fuzzy as Z goes up

Hi all.

I have had my Prusa for a year now. Most of my prints were low(ish), say, not more than 100mm Z. They always turned out great. Great grip on the plate, no seams, just beautiful.

This time I went higher up (200mm) and the higher the Z goes, the fuzzier the texture becomes. (See image).

I'm suspecting the following:

  • The geometry is such way that filling in the gaps between perimeters makes it fuzzy
  • My desk is just a little shaky (like veeery little, normally it does not show any difference) but the higher it goes, obviously, the movement might be higher, but then the top top part looks just amazing. So it might not be this!
  • It has something to do with the design (wall thickness) and slicing. I'm saying this because as it fills in the "middle" layer, the nozzle just jumps around and fills in very small dots of filament here and there.
  • p.s. the thickness of the walls is the same everywhere. Meaning throughout all the ogive shape it's the same.

Please let me know what you think and what your suggestions are.

Print is in PLA (prusament) 215/60 deg

Thank you in advance.

Hi all.

I'm still looking for answers on this one. If anyone has had a similar experience, I'd be very happy if they shared.

Thank you again!

Oops, your subject line is a little misleading, I thought you were trying to apply a deliberate graduated fuzzy skin...

Please save your project as a .3mf file

Files > Save Project as

Zip the .3mf and post it here. It will contain both your part and your settings for us to diagnose.

Cheerio,

Hi Diem.

Thank you for your post. Here is the 3mf file. As far as I can see it has to do with the slicing (the switching between perimeter and gap fillers). Is there any way to control that? Thanks in advance.

Couple of approaches to get rid of the infill jumps in that region.

I added a Height Range Modifier for the range of 89.90 through 152.30.

Approach one is to change the layer height in that region to 0.1, which appears to eliminate the infill issues,

Approach two is to increase the extrusion width for external and internal perimeters in that area. I tried 0.5, which again eliminated the issues.

I didn't spend more than a few minutes on this, so I don't claim the range is optimal or the extrusion widths are optimal but I hope it gives you a starting point for exploration.

Why you're seeing this issue in the first place? I guess it's related to the width of the walls. You said the thickness of the walls is the same for the whole model. Yes, that's probably the case in your design software (inner wall offset by x off the outer wall). But the slicing is done in layers parallel to the xy plane (aka the steel sheet). So at the beginning, when the walls are basically vertical, the distance between inner and outer perimeter is exactly what you set in your design. However, as the curvature of the cone increases toward the top, the horizontal slices lead to cross-sections that have a different (larger) distance between the inner and outer perimeter, so require more infill. I'm mostly a Fusion 360 guy. In Fusion 360, there's a tool called Section Analysis, which would show that very clearly.

I think you've nailed it @fuchsr.  Playing with wall thickness and perimeter count is another way to try.

Thank you so much, guys. I had already figured out why it is happening, just not how to fix it. To be totally frank, I need to experiment more with the Height Range Modifier and explore these options. In this case, I did sand the model and painted it (looks pretty neat) as that was the plan all along, but for future models, this might come in very handy. The nose was also modeled in Fusion so, yeah!

@valmir

Sounds like you got things sorted, I did make some adjustments and printed your model, sometimes it take more then a day or two to get info, as we all have things going on in our lives. Anyway this how it came out.

Sorry I missed you, good luck with your education.
