Should I be worried about the light wearing of the x-axis belt?

Hi all,

Firstly I just wanted to say thanks for all your contributions on this forum. I have only just bought my Prusa Mk3s a few weeks ago. The online guide, accompanying videos and all the guidance on this forum were so useful.

I was lucky enough to get things set up well first time and am very pleased with the result. I had some initial challenges with getting the first layer to stick well but the tips here sorted the issue and prints are flying off the bed.

I did have one question though. I have noticed the x-axis belt appears to be wearing a little - see photo below where you can see the white line where the belt is being worn. The wearing is appearing on the right hand side of the extruder on the top part of the belt. It is very minimal.

x-axis belt wear

I am also very confused as I cannot see for the life of me where the belt is making contact to cause the wearing. The belt is clear from both the orange x-end idler and the 623h bearing. See photo below. As the belt moves there is no contact between the edge of the bearing and the front part of the belt.

Belt clearance

I have inked over the wearing and let the printer work its magic to see if the wearing persists and it does gradually.

Running the belt tension test i get the following results: X=254, y=271.

The prints i get a great, no issues at all so my question is - Am I worrying to much, should I just continue as normal or will this grow to become a problem and do i need to look to change the configuration of the belt somehow.

Thoughts on a postcard would be much appreciated and if there is any other information you need please do ask

Thanks again for this great community, I can already see I am going to get hooked into this new found hobby

Regards

Will

If you don't hear weird noises I wouldn't worry about it. That said, I am the same way, alway wanting to know what's causing something. Is the wearing on the front or back of the belt? While looking at the 623h bearing and pushing the head all the way to the left then right it doesn't contact the inside walls of the bearing? Also some people have rubbing showed in the picture below with the big black arrow...

@gkmakeit

Thanks for the reply, there are no odd noises and it is a subtly wearing away, nearly 5 days worth of printing so far and it’s only a slight wearing away of the belt.

the wear occurs on the front of the belt, but if I move the extruder back and fore the front of the belt never makes contact with the edge of the bearing. That’s the odd thing as the back of the belt doe rest against the edge of the bearing - as per the photo, but there is no wearing away on the back. Very strange.

thanks for the feedback though, much appreciated.

Fwiw I don't like idler pulleys rubbing on either side of the belt but not enough to switch to a toothed idler. Also, I may be wrong but manually moving the extruder on the X axis isn't the same as having the X stepper motor move it for you.
