could it be a bad motor? all of the motors are connected to rambo appropriately

Double-, or even "triple-", -check your wiring again. Hopefully it is that simple 😊

And if it's still not working after you triple check, *temporarily* switch the connectors for left and right Z motors and see if the problem moves, you are checking whether it's a bad motor or a bad socket.

I had the z and e connectors connected wrong on the rambo board. I also encountered a second problem during the self test. The heads of the zip tie hit the kinsy enclosure which caused an error so i had to rotated them a bit.  Also the x-axis motor is referred to as the z stepper motor however the motor itself is labeled as which is where the confusion came form. Their all labeled as x-axis, however that is not the case. Alls good now though woot!
