I just received this machine and I now fear the nozzle is clogged. No filament comes out.

Firstly, there should be a test that lays out a foot of filament on command so one can tell if the nozzle is clogged.

It also seems like the sensor is at same height as nozzle. That can't be good.

What test can I do to see if sensor has dropped in the Z or that the nozzle as been pushed up in the Z?

Thanks,

Frustrated new user who has only printed a frog.

You can extrude filament by setting a print temp and using the Move menu option to select the E (extruder) axis.

If properly assembled the PINDA probe should be very slightly above to nozzle tip. Was you Mk3 a kit or pre-assembled? The online manual has good instructions for adjusting the PINDA height.

I can appreciate your frustration. Please keep in mind most of us here are not Prusa employees and are willing to help. You can also reach out to Prusa support via chat when logged into the online store, though they're understandably understaffed at the moment.

@bobstro

Thanks. Setting temperature to what? I looked through all the menus and saw no MOVE command. Can you tell me exactly where it might be?

So, if the nozzle can be clear thusly, why do some have to take assembly apart?

This came assembled.

Thank you again.

Oh, I found it. Thanks. What is the meaning of a + or - number under move extruder.
Should it not say move filament because the extruder moves with the x axis.

Well, the E axis is a separate motor/dimension if you will. It's the extruder motor moving the filament. You can't take "dimension" too literally, but it's not X, Y or Z either, so it's called E-Axis. The +/- is amount of extrusion (push) or retraction (pull).

I did E move both plus and minus and no filament came out or retracted. Should I send it back or try to take it apart to clean nozzle? I might make it worse...unless it is easy. Cannot find video shown how to do. There is one but looks like completely different version.
Thanks

Frankly, you should read the manual first, trying to understand your printer instead of complaining what features it should have. The manual and the ton of videos provided by Prusa are not only for those who self-assemble the printer. A word of warning: If you expect that there is no need to understand the printer but it is a "hit a start button and print a perfect result"-thing, this is not the case. This is an evolving technology which needs some enthusiast´s engagement to work.

Secondly, you won´t have printed a frog with the PINDA sensor the same height as the nozzle. Anyways, the manual explains in detail how to set up the sensor height.

Thirdly, we don´t know zilch about your setup. Filament loaded? Did you unload (and potentially broke) the filament prior to the print you are currently trying to start? What is the situation in which there is no filament coming out of the nozzle? Did the printer run the initial start sequence and is now running the print sequence without filament extruding? Any read-outs on the display?

I understand what you're saying.

"Frankly, you should read the manual first,"

I did read the manual cover to cover and have watched 30-40 videos.

I printed the frog and attempted to print something else. I was printing overnight and in the morning i noticed the nozzle moving but nothing coming out (probably been doing that for hours). I have not seen a video of anyone taking the nozzle off and cleaning. Machine came pre-built. No kit manual.

I don't know what more I can do short of blindly trying to take it apart to get nozzle off.

Can anyone recommend a video where someone with a Prusa i3 MKS pre assembled printer, removes nozzle and cleans it?
I have tried cold pulling and it did nothing.

Thanks

Hi Squarkman,

Are you happy for me  to call you that, or do you have a preferred 'Friendlyname'?

there are online assembly manuals at the following Link
https://manual.prusa3d.com/

the early days with a 3D printer are the most difficult.

I am not sure of your current printing status.

If you are suffering with the nozzle blocked, is the filament stuck in the extruder?
If yes, can you heat the nozzle using 'Preheat' option on the LCD menu (I suspect you are using the Prusa PLA filament, so initially preheat to PLA temperatures (Note this will also preheat the heatbed)
once the temperatures stabilise (Look at the LCD Display) ,  can you use the 'Unload filament' option to actually unload the filament?
was that successful?

 let us know what happens, Pictures are often useful.

regards Joan

@joantabb

Hi Joan,  Thanks for your response. Please call me Rocky.
The filament is free to remove from the top, where it inserts. There must be a clog internal where I cannot access.
I saw a video where someone removed a nozzle cooling fan. Figured I would try that but the screws holding that in are not phillips. flathead or allen type.

And if you heat the printer(how hot depends on what kind of filamant your using), then insert new filament, then look for load filament in the menu.

3d printer, you have to learn how to build the machine, also you need to learn how to adjust the software to get good prints.

learn on this forum and google has a lot of movies.

RE: I just received this machine and I now fear the nozzle is clogged. No filament comes out.

Removing clogged filament is dead easy in most cases and does not require major part removal:

https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/removing-filament-from-extruder-manually_121491

Just go step by step, all ifs and buts are already considered in the manual, and you should be fine in a few minutes.

In worst case its necessary to pull the PTFE tube, but that´s rather rare just because of a clogged nozzle, really: https://help.prusa3d.com/en/guide/how-to-replace-ptfe-tube-on-the-mk3s-mk2-5s-mmu2s_21664

For tightening the gear drive door after you´re done again, refer to the build manual to achieve a good pressure of the door without overtorquing.

It happens sometimes that filament does not let itself unload and decides to break inside the extruder assembly. Some stuff like ASA just hates to be removed... Just do as described in the manual linked above and one of the two methods should work nicely. The Prusa pliers delivered with the printer will do the job nicely.

@peter-m26

I heated printer to PLA temp and inserted filament and nothing comes out. I purchased prebuilt. Maybe that was mistake.

Thanks

How are you inserting the filament exactly? Have you cut the filament at the end to have a good clean end to stick in? Have you tried pushing the filament down as the motor tries to extrude it? Are you getting the filament in far enough to make contact with the gears?

And no offence, but if you can't figure out how to take the extruder apart, purchasing a prebuilt was not a mistake because you'd have gotten so frustrated trying to put it together you would have given up.

I insert filament when lcd instructs me to after nozzle heats up to pla temp. I have good cut and clean end at end of filament. I have tried pushing filament as motor tries to extrude it. I think it is getting to gears. I opened the door to expose gears and do not see any filament piled up around gears.

@just3d

I did do method 1. I fed filament as as far as it would go (past gears) no blockage there.

You won't push stuck filament fith a pla string. Do with allen key at 280 degrees as per instructions and * push*

@just3d

Oh, ok. It looked optional
"Using another piece of filament, a thin (1-1,5 mm) Allen-wrench or same diameter wire..."
I will try allen wrench. If I understand what you are saying...the pla thread could glide past any blockage so use allen wrench.

What if blockage is BELOW the gears?
Thanks
