Extruder grub screw loose!

Warning for myself and all users.

The extruder grub screws should be in a maintenance plan.(and the x-axis)

My extruder grub screw was loose, and after long searching I found it was the grub screw.(and lost a lot of time).

And another warning if you work on the grub screw,

fold a white paper so you can catch a falling grub screw, this is because it is very small, and you can loose if fast, and yes I lost it by letting it fall, and could not find it anymore.

RE: Extruder grub screw loose!

There are some extras in your spares bag.  For the folks here - what was the symptom for a loose extruder grub screw?  Inconsistent extrusion? No extrusion?

Oh, and since you are tightening grub screwS - there are two screws involved.  First tighten the one against the flat shaft.  Then tighten the second one.

I had the extruder apart on a mini+ yesterday for cleaning and whoever assembled it at the factory did not have the grub screw lined up with the flat part of the extruder motor shaft.  Would have likely loosened up sooner.

Long time I had a clicking sound on the beginning of printing, after that everything worked.

Then I started to get clicking noise wen retractions where happening.

Then prints started to get holes in layers and filaments stop extruding, and even sometimes the extrusion started to work again higher up in the print.

Good work figuring that out and fixing it.  Thanks for posting the symptoms that go with the problem.

I've had the same problem, clicking noise, underextrusion and poor, weak prints.

It turns out I have lost the grub screw. I looked in the spares and there isn't one.

Anyone know the size so I can get a replacement?

RE: Extruder grub screw loose!

on the Mk3 series, the extruder grub screw is M3x2mm -  2mm long
On the X and Y toothed wheels they are M3X3mm          - 3mm long
I Believe the thermistor grub screw is also M3x3  but I have never replaced one.

RE: Extruder grub screw loose!

Thanks for the info.

I did manage to find a spare and fit it. But I still have the same problem. I'ts clicking and not extruding properly.

If i lightly hold the filament at the top while loading I can feel it skipping on the extruder when it clicks, like it's not gripping or being stopped from going through.

I'm not sure why that's happening. I tried adjusting the tension on the two screws, but no good.

RE: Extruder grub screw loose!

you may have a blockage.
Try loosening the bondtech gears, heating the hot end up to a high temperature, say 280C and grasping the filament  firmly (Both hands) about 10mm above the extruder then pushing down firmly to try and move the filament through the nozzle,

If that doesn't shift the blockage remove the nozzle and try again.
you could try the same again, with pliers instead of fingers.
