Cannot calibrate Z axis

I got this printer used it is a 3MKS.

I tested it with a print already on the SD card that came with it and the print was perfect with no issues.

I noticed that the firmware was from 2020, so i decided to updated the firmware to the latest version and since I did that I cannot calibrate the z axis

I even tried reverting to the older versions and resetting to factory settings and trying again but it still wont work and not sure where to begin I am new to 3d printing and cannot figure this out. Also checked the pinda sensor and that seems fine.

Thanks for any help!

Please run the built in first layer Z calibration and show us the result *on the print sheet*.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

Please post a picture of your printer.  And also maybe one giving some detail of the extruder.  There are some modifications, that will require a modified firmware in order to pass Z calibration.  Pictures may help us to identify if you have a modified printer.

I also forgot it does have an upgraded misquito hot end not sure if that matters or not, here are some pictures of the printer

Thanks again for the help

I ran the Z calibrate on the printer and this is the error it gives.

Thanks for your help!

It does matter. The z calibration does two things: level the two z-axis sides by going all the way up to the end stops and then measuring the z-axis length by going all the way down and sensing the 9 calibration points with PINDA. If your extruder differs from the stock one in height this will fail. Firmware differs depending on the stock extruder already MK3S/MK2.5S vs. MK3/MK2.5.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

So how do I know which firmware to go with to pass the calibration?

Also thanks for the reply appreciate the input.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

Yeah there are a bunch of modified parts on that printer, and not just the extruder.  I was hoping you had the same common upgraded extruder that one of my printers has, then I could just send you to the specific firmware for that mod, which would have been easy.  But yeah, what Robin said.  Possibly the reason your printer had such an old firmware, is the previous owner of your printer who made the mods, may have compiled custom firmware for it to specify the correct Z height for the Mosquito hot end.

Once that's been done, then every time a new version of the firmware comes out, in order to upgrade you have to modify the source code of the new version again (and hope they didn't change anything that will affect how your mod works) and recompile.  It's a pain in the butt and is the reason why printers with a non-standard Z height tend to not be running the latest firmware.

RE:

If you are using the Bondtech upgrade kit for the mosquito see here for a firmware upgrade: https://github.com/BondtechAB/Bondtech_Prusa_i3

Otherwise you have to change and recompile Z_MAX_POS in configuration_prusa.h und possibly Thermistor table in source FW.

wbr,

Or obtain different parts to get back to a known configuration and use the appropriate firmware for that.  But I would for sure try the Bondtech firmware that Karl suggested first, nothing really to lose there.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

Hey I updated the firmware to "Update FW3101-Build5214-Bondtech-MK3-16-EINSy10a-E3Dv6full.zip"

That did fix the z axis issue and calibrates fine but going through the setup wizard it says waiting for nozzle and bed cooling.

It never gets passed that issue so not sure If i got the wrong build or if it isn't the full fix for this issue.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

The link you posted appears to be for the Bondtech extruder with an E3D V6 hot end.  It's probably not compatible with your Mosquito hot end.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

Also, I looked at the assembly instructions at Robin's link, and comparing with your pictures, I don't believe you have the Bondtech extruder, which would mean you have some other mod for using the Mosquito hot end.  Honestly I think unless you just absolutely gotta use the Mosquito, I think it would be simplest to obtain parts to get you back to a known configuration and then you can use the appropriate known firmware for that configuration.

RE: Cannot calibrate Z axis

Had the same problem when I did my first calibration: Solution was to turn both threaded rods so that the Z axis (printer head) is completely on top (I think this resets the current settings from the Z axis).

Then turn on the printer again and run the first calibration -> printer will take a few minutes to measure the 4 points..
