Assembly surpises?

I just finished my X and Y axis before realizing they're super noisy because the bearings are dry. After reading online apparently I need to clean them and pack them despite the manual saying in bold they're pre-lubed.
I live an hour away from town, are there any other surprises I need to pick up a solution for so I can get this thing assembled?

RE: Assembly surpises?

there should be a tube of grease in the kit...

It still surprises me that prusa reckon these bearings are pre lubed...

I use Dish soap and water to clean the build plate, especially the textured build plate... in preference to other surface preparations.
Make sure your build plate is clean before your first print...

there is a 7x7 mesh bed levelling option on the L|CD Menu, I use this.

Hi Joan,

I just checked the German online manual for the + and Prusa still says that the bearings are lubricated already. At least they seem to include a tube of grease now for lubing during regular maintenance, per packing list; quite interesting.

Cheers

I must be a rebel...
I always lube the linear bearings during a build, so that I 'KNOW' they are lubed, rather than trusting that someone else has done it for me...    🙂

Same here - but I don´t think one should as a beginner necessarily expect that the bearings are not greased if the manual says otherwise....

After getting the Y greased the difference in sound and feel is massive.

Not sure why the instructions don't include this. My only guess is packing all of these bearings would require way more gummy bears.

RE: Assembly surpises?

I REALLY wish we would get an official straight from the Prusa engineers' pen (or keyboard) clarification on the remark that the bearings are 'pre-lubricated' and require no additional action during assembly.

Yes, yes, yes, I've read all kinds of remarks here and on other fora stating everything from 'don't worry about it' to 'the printer will blow up and destroy the earth' if you don't carefully un-lube and re-lube the bearings.

I followed TFM and did not do anything to the bearings when I assembled it, and it's had regular use for over two years and there's no evidence at all (yet?) that the lubrication was insufficient.  I put a drop of lightweight synthetic machine oil on the rods every so often, and rub a dab of the Prusa lube or Superlube on the rods every so-many so oftens.

My best guess is that the Prusa engineers consider the supplied lube to be more than adequate for the load on the bearings over the expected life of the machine, but I would sure like to hear something straight from the horse's mouth on the topic.

RE: MISUMI Bushings lubrication instructions

straight from the horse's mouth

The horse in this case is NOT Prusa, for sure...

I am worried that they keep this wrong assembly instruction for such a long time.

See this MISUMI document:  https://de.misumi-ec.com/files/images/products/docs/linearbushings.pdf

On Page 4 bottom left, you can read, that the bushings are NOT greased (click to enlarge the pictures) .

You could get them pre-greased by Misumi, but these would have  a "L" "G" or "H" added to the part number.

RE: Assembly surpises?

Yes, I've read that one, and no, that was not the horse I am referring to.

I would like someone from Prusa to clarify their statement that no additional lube is needed, and, specifically, why.

Are the bearings they send out straight from the factory with only the anti-rust oil, or are they re-lubed at the Prusa site? The item cited above says that pre-lubed bearings are available. Are these what Prusa sends out?

I'm assuming that Prusa runs hundreds/thousands of these machines in the farm, all using the same bearings that they supply to us, and they know what lubrication the bearings need or do not need, and based their instructions in TFM on their experience running (and maintaining) them in the farm.

Hey, is this what your y axis sounded like before fixing it? Trying to figure out what this noise is coming from and if it’s the bearing on the smooth rods or not.

Really hard to tell but it could be. Mine had a very abrassive scratchy. The video just sounds squeeky to me.

To me I think you should pack your bearings anyway. It's just packing grease in them, it's not meant to be a long term friction lube so much as a corrosion preventative.

I'd also make sure your Y belt Idler isn't too tight / spins freely. And that the gear on the stepper isn't up against the stepper.  I think it has to be one of those 3 things I could be wrong though.

Thanks for the tips Joan.

I just started a wide print and adjusted Z on the fly, I love that ability. I'm pretty used to adjusting Z with by doing a bunch of small prints.
For the rest the self calibration is impressive too when comparing it to my other machines. I'd still probably be tuning if I got a new one of them.
The instructions were great, there was one step that I intended to remember because I thought it was written weird but I forgot it.

My printer has been running without any issues. It's on its second 17 hr print. The first one was perfect.
I really like the Silver filament it came with for a few things I want to print but it isn't the best for determining Z offset or identifying defects. The only other filament I have is ABS for my other machines.

RE:

Literally my first print ( and my Fiancee's thumb), I adjusted my Z while printing the base of it.  No calibration tests or anything, I'll have to do that stuff then I switch to ABS anyway.

36 hr total and it came out perfect.
