Assembly Question - Heatbed mounting

Hi - I am assembling my MK3s and to this point it has gone well and fairly quick, but now I'm running into an issue...

The instructions (Part 7, Step 22-23) says to use a spacer on the center hole of the heatbed to align the heatbed to the Y-Carriage.  I was able to do that and insert the screw - no problem.

However - the holes on the left and right side (in the next step) do NOT align between the heatbed and the carriage.  They are off by at least a millimeter or more, and I won't be able to get those screws in properly.  On closer inspection it seems that I could either align the middle screws to the Y carriage, or the ones on the left and right, but not all 9.

Am I missing something?  Are all the screws on the sides not intended to connect to the Y-carriage?

Iirc the middle of the heat bed also has screws for the belt mount.  Make sure you are using the correct hole in the middle. One thing that I had problems with was the powder coating getting into the threads, ream them out with a spare screw to make sure the threads are clear and easy before assembly. It’s a pain in the rear taking it all apart when the last screw won’t fit in the thread.

You have a good memory - there are.  But that was not my issue - I seem to have flipped my Y-carriage 180 degrees - I guess I assumed it was symmetrical.

Thanks for the response regardless!

No definitely not symmetrical as there are 2 bearings on one side and only one on the other. I also seem to recall the build manual mentioning  making sure you have it the correct way round lol. I remember taking about 2 days to carefully put my mk3 together, using mainly the online version of the manual as it has user comments. Luckily as I’d checked everything multiple times it went together perfectly with only 0.012 degrees of skew.

When I put my friends mk3s together it went much quicker. Until that is I got to build steps that they had changed between the models. Like the power supply mounting points. After that I slowed back down and actually read the manual again.  It can catch anyone out, especially if you are really excited and want to get it built. Taking a little extra time now can save you lots later. Like properly greasing your bearings now. Something that the manual says isn’t needed. Just ask all those people who get binding or noisy bearings a few weeks in , or less.

Anyway good luck with the rest of your build, hope everything goes well and you are soon a happy printer 😀

It only took 10 minutes to correct after an hour trying to figure out where I went wrong - just slip it off the rods, disconnect the belt, and flip it around.  Certainly my fault.  The instructions were very clear!

All in all it hasn't been that bad - its probably taken me 7 hours to this point.  Just a careless mistake from working on it too late at night 🙂
