Another first layer problem.

Hi. I’ve completed the kit and have had some success printing, but now I’m having trouble with my first layer being inconsistent and often unusable. Not sure if it’s related but I’m also getting some creaking noise when the printer changes direction and sometimes for the full length of a pass. It sounds like something is loose? Or maybe it’s the extruder gear?

I’ll try to post a video with sound.

Thanks,

RE: Another first layer problem.

At first glance it appears your Z height is slightly too low, and/or your filament is damp, and/or your print temp is too high. It’s also possible there’s a bit of oil from fingerprints on the print sheet.

Read the reply to the OP in this thread for some good info and useful links to get you Z level dialed in properly and your print sheet squeaky clean.

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/assembled-mk3s-kit-cant-get-past-the-calibration-without-problems-nozzle-to-high-then-nozzle-drags-paper-in-xyz-cal/

There shouldn’t be any creaking or strange noises coming from a new printer. Put a few drops of synthetic oil on the smooth rods on both the X and Y axes. Wipe it all along the rods with your fingers then manually move the bed and the extruder back and forth to distribute the oil. Be sure not to get any oil on the print sheet.

Both axes should move freely with no binding or rough spots along the travel paths. If something seems off, check the smooth rods for any scratches. On the Y axis, you can loosen a couple of the screws that hold the smooth rods in place, move the bed to one end then tighten the screws at that end, then slide it to the opposite side and tighten those screws.

Take your time and be thorough. Good luck.

Cheers

Thanks, @randym9 for the reply and the link to the advice from @joantabb. I’ll give it all a try.
