Ahhh so close

😥 So building the 3d printer finally after receiving it a month ago. I knew as soon as I started I wouldn't quit and I had other projects for the wife higher on the list. So after about 6 hours total I got it built.

I must compliment the directions although I appreciate the online bit I like to have it in paper so I printed off the entire thing. Now the reason for the title. I was attempting to put the spool holder on and holy crap its tight! I read the warning and re-read the warning so I was trying to put more pressure on the bottom of it....but I failed.

Aww jeez. I've heard a lot of people's spool holders snapped when they tried to put it on. Maybe a first print? I'm waiting on my mk3 and am lucky enough to already have a couple printers I can use to make replacement parts if necessary, but it sounds like Prusa needs to update their design.

According to the manual they have a double spew holder coming out in spring 2018. Hopefully that will be a bit better. I will have to rig something up to hold the spool so I can have a first print 🙂 . (my only 3d printer for now)

just glue it with CA glue and put some tape around it to give it support or wrap it with string and soak the wrapped string in CA glue it will act like a splint., try it out if it holds run the print for a new one.

Hi there. From the picture looks like you have another small problem - trapezoid nut upside down. Take a look in the manual Section 4, Step 6, for the details. I understand that this is an issue as it limits the travel on the Z axis if not correct.

Its for the best, that spool holder sucks!
It is very springy and bounced around a lot on mine, besides it would not accept some smaller 1/2kg spools I have.
I printed this one from ABS and have not looked back, no bouncing and it accepts all of the spools I have.

Re: Ahhh so close

When I started to install the spool holder I saw that the fit was too tight so I filed the leading edge on the bottom part of the clip. With this edge rounded I have no problem putting the holder on and off the frame. My other problem was that I have some spools with a smaller hole so I designed and printed a holder that works for these spools.

I printed o e of these before my mk3 came, to use on my mk2s. I knew there was no way it would press fit in place.
So I used pliers and a towel to pull the bottom on instead of pushing the arm to lever the bottom in place. That thing is not going to come off in one piece.

I highly advise using pliers not lever force.

Eagle Eye  You're correct and matthew.h24 should take a look at it.

Hi Matthew,
glue the spool holder for now and use this G-code to print a new one, I recommend the PETG version:
https://www.prusa3d.com/wp-content/uploads/SpoolHolder_B4_Gcode.zip

Also, you have to turn the trapezoidal nuts on the X-axis upside down. See this step 6 once more:

Ahh thank you for catching that! Will get it fixed as soon as I get home.

Right now I have the filament hung from a post in my basement and seems to be working fine. Still have to get the micro calibration done from the tip to the bed.

You're welcome to mine - I printed a spool holder with bearings that works quite well and no longer use the factory holder.

@k1mu

Just an FYI, this thread, and this user hasn't been active on the forum in 4 years, and Prusa has been using injection molded spool holders for years now.
