Strange issue with new printer

Hi, I received my MK2S kit a week ago and have been slowly assembling it after work, being very meticulous making sure everything is correct and aligned. This morning I finally finished and started doing the selftests and calibrations.

Initially everything looked good, the nozzle didn't catch on the piece of paper between it and the bed during the XYZ calibration though it was really close to the bed - I take it this is desired at this stage. The printer found the 9 points and began 'improving' them in turn. For points 1 to 3 it was a very slow process inching closer to the bed but still didn't catch the paper. points 4 to 6 were faster but still no issue. But then when it went to do point 7, which it had already found before, it tried to drive the nozzle 1cm past the bed immediately! I don't think there is an issue with the probe, I think there is a bug in the firmware that caused it to record the wrong height when it first found point 7. if it were just a few mm past the bed I would say my probe is too high, but this was way more than that. The whole bed flexed and I hope hasn't been damaged.

Has anyone encountered this? What could cause it?

Of course I powered off the printer immediately and manually wound the z axis rods to lift the extruder off the bed. The piece of paper had a nice tiny hole punched through it. I didn't see any marks on the bed coating luckily but I'm worried by the amount it flexed

I have not seen the printer fail on an XYZ after the first four. The only thing of is that the PINDA is right at the edge of the detection range (it might be a bit high) which caught the first time, but somehow in averaging got a bad value. Try lowering it a bit. It should be about 0.6mm above the nozzle, about the thickness of a credit card.

Much better that time. I think it's odd though how it just immediately moved to ~1cm below the board instead of the position it was at when it was looking for the 'reference height', I'm not sure a weak sensor reading would explain this or it would have done it earlier on that spot. Anyway, if it was the sensor height then the new assembly instructions are wrong to suggest using the zip tie to offset it - they're too thick!

I think it's odd though how it just immediately moved to ~1cm below the board instead of the position it was at when it was looking for the 'reference height', I'm not sure a weak sensor reading would explain this or it would have done it earlier on that spot. the ziptie trick does work but you really have to squeeze it against the bed. If you don't the probe is indeed a little bit to high from the bed.
So using a visa card is indeed a better option, but they cannot really use that in their instructions I guess since they don't include one in their package 😉

Maybe they can 3d print a gauge to use that's just the right thickness 😉 But I wouldn't complain if they included a credit card
