Start Gcode scripts

Hello All,
I'm not happy with Slic3r Prusa Edition mainly because the UI is crap. The software keeps crashing, and slicing speeds are dial up modem slow. It works and gets good results at least. So because of this I wanted to use either Cura 2.4, or Craftware or Cura v15 but I'm running into issues with the start gcode. Just taking the standard start gcode from slic3r and puting it in craftware doesn't work for some reason. Cura 2.4 just doesn't generate good results. If anyone is using CraftWare PLEASE give me your start gcode that works for you. I recommend you guys try craftware so you can see what I mean. S3D isn't an option for me because $150 is a little steep. Idealy I would like to use Cura v15 but the gcode doesn't work for that as well.

Thanks for any help,
Brandon Esser

Slic3r Should really be optimized by now 👿

What version do you refer to?

Re: Start Gcode scripts

I have had Craftware working; It's an OK slicer, but I think I will only generate absolute E.

KISS is my favourite and the only one I use at the moment. I also have issues with Slic3r UI although some of it's newer functionality is pretty good.

I no longer use Cura (since V2) but still have 15 loaded for a quick look at models - there are a few things I can do that I can't do with KISS.

It looks like someone has found some settings that work. I haven't tried them so use at your own risk.

Just reading through those settings, it does look as though there are some serious issues in there (G92 missing)...

Honestly I think slic3er PE is the shit! It is a bit slow on the slicing. But otherwise i think its really good. And Im never in that big of a hurry that i cant wait 30 seconds for it to do its thing. Ofc it has some things left to wish for. But I am sure they will come eventually. But for a free program it rocks!

I use Slic3r Prusa edition, latest version, and I really cannot understand all the complaints about slicing speed.

I never once had a print that took so long to slice that I even considered looking at the time.

Maybe you are using an old verison? Maybe you are trying to slice on a pentium?

Maybe the linux version is just that much faster?

I have no idea, but I would be really interested in some models that take you a long time to slice and try them out on my setup.

Agree totally with that. If a slicer generates the GCode fast, then that may be an indication of a poor quality print. I would much rather the slicer do its job properly and end up with a better finished model. Yes, the slicing speed of Slic3r has been increased recently, but it is still not as fast as others. But really who cares? So you wait a few minutes for the model to be sliced and many hours for the model to print.

Long time user of S3D but converting slowly to Slic3r.

Always found S3D to be quick, stable with great print quality.
I simply can't get it to work how I want with the MK2 so have been leaning into the Slic3r camp. I can't say that the few seconds longer to slice is a deal breaker for me so I'm not overly fussed. Highly flexible Custom supports are what I really miss most. There are a couple of other bits I also miss like the ease of using multiple processes but hey ho. Wish I hadn't wasted $150 on S3D to be honest.

Re: Start Gcode scripts

Slic3r Prusa Edition is getting better and better. I do miss the manual supports, but other than that it has a much better interface than S3D and the profiles management is much better.

It does not have "multiple processes"´, but it has modifiers which are much more powerful as they're not constrained to layer height. I do have to use modelling software to design the modifier objects, but open scad works really well and is very easy to use.

And this latest edition "Smooth Variable Layer Height" 😀
