Prusa i3 MK2S - Stop in extruder

Hi,
I have since a few days the above mentioned printer. I bought a kit and it was a dream building it as all the parts and the instructions were VERY good. However, after a number of prints and good results I choose to change filament. Unfortunately I did it as shown on a Youtube video where they just cut the mounted filament and let it the feed through. When loading the new filament it stopped 3 centimeters down from the feed of the extruder motor. A centimeter or two into the extruder body there is something blocking. The needle in the kit for cleaning the nozzle is going all the in (3 cm) from the other end, i.e. the nozzle, nothing blocking.
Has anyone experienced this and is a new extruder the solution?

Hi Goran

in the cross section above, you can see an E3Dv6 extruder in cross section.
in the original prusa i3
you have a similar setup.
it is likely that the filament is jammed somewhere inside the assembly

the picture above is the same as your actual extruder assembly and the picture below shows where it fits in the Mk2s

in the top cross section picture the red line is the filament

first of all I would try removing the two tension screws from the pinch roller assembly. this should allow you to see the top of the PTFE tube inside the extruder housing.

you should also see the hobbed drive gear . i will continue in another message as i cant add more pictures here

in the picture above you can see the grey filament crossing the hobbed drive gear and entering the white ptfe tubing inside the orange extruder housing.

when you cut the filament, the drive wheel will have continued pushing it into the ptfe tube, until the end of the filament passed the hobbed drive gear, then it will have been unable to drive anymore.

it is likely that the cut end of the old filament was not 'square' to the filament, and it is also likely that the end of the new filament was not square to the filament.... so when you pushed the new filament into the top of the extruder housing, it probably wedged to one side or the other, of the old filament, rather than pushing it into the ptfe tubing...

what i suggest is that, you preheat the extruder and try manually inserting the new filament into the extruder body, while watching through the idler lever window, as shown in the picture above to ensure that the new filament pushes the old filament into the ptfe tube

if all is well, this will push the old filament out of the hot nozzle

then you can put the idler wheel / lever back in place and re insert the tension screws, as shown in the assembly guide, and continue with your printing...

Hi Joan,
MANY thanks for your prompt reply!! After seeing your pictures I tried several things and in the end I used a drill with a 1,5 mm diameter and drilled a few cm down into the extruder. In this way it all opened up! I have recalibrated and done a successful printing with high resolution.
