Prusa firmware and Ubuntu possible?

For the last couple days, I've been trying to connect to my MK2 from Ubuntu 16.04 with only partial success (connection made and basic hardware details are shown on computer). I've tried to communicate with the printer via 3 methods: RepetierHost, Arduino (terminal monitor) and avrdude. With RH and Arduino I get the "handshake" only. Avrdude just times out. I'm new to printing and Linux, have some experience with Arduino and weak in avrdude. My main question is: Is it even possible to communicate (RepetierHost, flash firmware etc) with MK2 (v3.1.0) from Ubuntu 16.04? Is there some driver I need to install? Is there some "version incompatibility" I need to worry about? From all the reading I've done my impression is that some versions of this or that won't work with this or that other thing. Case in point, the instructions here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/tree/MK2/ArduinoAddons seem to imply version specific addons are required, yet there is nothing for the most recent Arduino versions. Any illumination would be greatly appreciated.
