OctoPrint vs SD Card

Can anyone tell me if there are potential quality issues if I print by streaming from OctoPrint from a RPi 3?

I've done a lot of searching, but can't find much in the way of answers. Some people say that OctoPrint will struggle to supply gcode data via USB at 115200 baud rates, so at times it will stutter and result in quality problems (more usually for prints with complex curves). Others say they haven't noticed any problems.

What do you guys think - is printing from an SD card going to result in a better quality print? I'm going to do some testing using the frog model at 60mm/s to see what happens, but that won't be for a few days.

Re: OctoPrint vs SD Card

I started with the SD card, until I was very comfortable with the printer, and it was working robustly.

Then I shifted to OctoPrint. It has been very reliable to me, and particularly like having the camera views and remote notification and control. I would recommend OctoPrint highly, after climbing the learning curve of the printer.

I did as Aaron.

Now im only using Octoprint, havent had any issues at all with it. Cannot see any quality differences between the SDcard and Octoprint prints.

Re: OctoPrint vs SD Card

There are some posts here regarding the slightly reduced print quality when printing via USB as opposed to SD card because of the limitation of the serial connection speed.

I have attempted to run the printer via OctoPrint at 250000 and 230400, but unfortunately that results in communication errors at certain points due to the RPi not being able to properly receive resend requests at those speeds (even with the various fixes which should allow it).

Some slicers (notably KISS) overcome potential issues of relatively slow baud rates by implementing features such as "Max Nodes/s" and "Min Segment Length".

Thanks for the feedback :).

Do you know if S3D or Slic3r PE do this by default?

I'm tempted to purchase a WiFi SD card so that I can print from SD and still use Octoprint for monitoring.

I have noticed some issues printing from SD while the Octoprint is connected. When i want to do a Live Z Cal, it makes sense to run from the SD card since I am right there anyway. It sometimes doesn't print. I disconnect the PI, and then it does. I believe I could figure out a work around, but have not had the need so I just disconnect when right there.
