Noise level on the MK2

Hello guys,

I am considering the MK2 as my next 3d printer and I would like to know, if anyone has tested, what is the noise level of this printer?
I only found a video on youtube about the original Prusa.

Thank you!

Don't have the Mk2 as yet, but the Mk1 has High Power or Quiet settings, the latter being very quiet for a 3D printer.

The Mk2 has more powerful motors which are being driven at similar power levels to the Mk1 which means they should be even quieter.

I think the noisiest parts will be the fans with a little noise from the bearings then the motors.

One thing to bare in mind is that there is no enclosure, so the noise levels may be greater than printers with enclosures, but you could always build your own.

Hi,

Thank you for the quick response.
Do you have a suggestion for the enclosure?
Maybe something like this http://reprapwilson.discoursehosting.net/t/make-a-simple-ikea-enclosure/123 ?

Cristian

There are a variety of self-built enclosures out there, using plywood and clear plastic sheeting and with printed parts for hinges and corner pieces.

You may find it better to build your own design to fit in with your decor.

Hi there,

I got my MK2 two days ago, and I can say that the noise level is ok.
But this answer is relative 😉 What is quite, what is silent.
Would a video help you? With noises to compare?

Greetings, Daniel

Re: Noise level on the MK2

I've got a MK1 (waiting for the upgrade to be shipped) and I built an enclosure out of two IKEA Lack tables. I found the instructions here

http://www.instructables.com/id/3d-Printer-Enclosure-from-Upcycled-Furniture/

The build is very easy when you take exact measurements for the plexiglass

Re: Noise level on the MK2

I have 2 mk1's and 2 mk2's in a room, the noise level is quite easy to deal with. The standing fan in the room is louder than the 4 printers. And with the door closed you cannot hear them outside of the room.

One of the recent reviews, (i belive it was Tom's review) he measured the actual decible level of the Mk2.

Right about the 13min mark.

Re: Noise level on the MK2

Hello guys,

I am considering the MK2 as my next 3d printer and I would like to know, if anyone has tested, what is the noise level of this printer?

It is hard to quantify that.

On my MK2 the 30mm extruder fan is typically the loudest thing I hear. I do have a loud moaning noise coming with large, fast, Y-axis movement (when the bed moves forward or back). I think the sound is amplified between the hot-end and the Y-Carriage. The print quality is very good. I'm guessing that the bearings are causing the noise, but am not sure.

There are some anti-vibration feet that you can print. They help with the general noise.

It is not something you want in your bedroom when you are trying to sleep.

I dont know.. sometimes when im working in my print room, the drone of the printers can kinda lull me to sleep, especially when its printing circular objects 😛 (you all know the sound!)

Generally, I agree. It is the load moaning noise from this particular printer's Y-carriage movement that would wake you...

I have this, not sure if it's making the same noise as yours though. I keep trying to figure out where the sound is coming from and can't, I need a stethoscope or something. It seems to be coming from the head or under the bed under the head, not the motor area or the opposite pulley. And it isn't all that consistent with regards to speed and direction and location. It will make very similar movements that can be very loud sometimes and quiet other times. It sounds bad, as in maybe it's damaging itself a bit, through excessive wear or whatever. This is my first printer, so aI have no idea what and how to compare it with anything. The silent mode does silence it at least.

Re: Noise level on the MK2

You can use a long screwdriver or rod. place one end against the area you are interested in, and the other against your ear... and the rod will transmit the localised noise... obviously this should not be put against the moving parts directly, but you couls press it against the X and Y shafts in an area where the printer is not moving...

if the printer does move in that area the results could be painful...
BE CAREFUL

... I keep trying to figure out where the sound is coming from and can't, I need a stethoscope or something. ...

I used a rectangle that was 160x50x6mm to help determine when I heard the noise. In my case, it was during the longer front to back bed movement, but only when those movements were fast (infill, but not exterior perimeters, with my Simplify3D settings).

It doesn't (yet) appear to be impacting print quality, but I would guess better/different bearings on the Y-carriage would quiet things. I understand some use the iGUS bearings, but I've also heard those are not a good match for the MK2 Y-carriage.
