Is changing z index correct behavior?

I am just wondering.
Always when i print i manualy change the z index. I even have a logbook where i write down per filament the best z index for first layer and best for further layers.
For example when i print nylon i change my z index to -1000 which is way too low for normal printing. But it squeezes the first layer nicely. Then when the first layer is almost finished i change the z index back to -550.
I use this method also for petg, abs and even pla. Is it a good way? Or can i do it smarter?
