Extruder delivers not enough filament
Hi all,
after a whole day trying to get my prusa MK2 back to work after a horrific print last month I guess I need your help.
What had happened:
- Print went bad
- All filament got up into the Extruder assembley
- a lot of heat was introduced
- most parts are OK so far
What I did
- Disassembled the Extruder and Wiring
- Cleaned the nozzle mechanically
- Reassembled the Extruder
- Selftest OK
- XYZ Calibration OK
- burned off remaining filament (That wasn't fun!), even my smoke detector went off
- everything looks good so far
And now I try to get the "V2Calbration.gcode" printed
What the problem is:
It looks like there is not enough flow of filament to create a solid line on the print bed.
- Loading / Unloading of filament works fine
- Manually feeding or removing the filament works fine
- I checked the wiring of the extruder motor for damages
- I even wrote a gcode file to turn the motor while I moved the wires - no issues, Extruder Motor is OK
- I checked the tension of the springs of the idler (13-14 mm)
- I tried a 2nd spool of PLA Filament
- White filament comes out perfectly white (before I printed in black)
- I installed the current firmware 3.0.10
- I loaded the current version of the V2Calibration.gcode from the prusa website and reprinted
- I disassembled the Extruder again, removed, checked and reinstalled the PTFE Tubing
- I checked the alignment of the pulley to the PTFE Tubing
- I checked the pulley for any loose filament remains- it is perfectly clean and moves the filament fine
- There is no skipping noise of the motor or the pulley
- I pulled the filament manually at 130 °C and this is what it looks like
And still the V2 Calibration I printed many many times is crap!
Is it possible, that I damaged the tip of the nozzle during mechanical cleaning?
If I do not get it back to work, I'll search for a new hobby and I am so desperate that last weekend I played golf already...
Any help appreciated! Thank you!
Re: Extruder delivers not enough filament
Solved,
new day, new motivation...
- removed the nozzle and as expected I was able to look through the little hole
- anyway cleaned again with a 0.3 mm steel wire
- Checked the whole filament path is clean
- reassembled everything
New attempt to print V2Calibration.gcode with the same result.
Recognized the extruded filament looked "overcooked" coming out of the nozzle. Rerun V2Calibration.gcode with significantly lower temperature of 185°C (this filament is given with 180 - 200°C) V2Calibration.gcode standard is 210°C
Had significantly better result and after a small Z Adjustment the result was flawless.
Whoohooo! I am back in business 😀 Solved

to get the first layer adjustment right with the v2_calibration.gcode, you need to be a lucky guy. 😛
that's why i've looked for a better method, that you can find at this thread.
by the way: did you check the thermistor as well ? it needs to have a very good thermal contact inside it's fitting (needs to be cleaned from molten pla, if there is some).
dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...
Re: Extruder delivers not enough filament
Did you tighten the two extruder screw enough? if not, the layers won't be good. The two screw should be perpendicular to the x axis(not too tight, but not too loose as well) so the filament can be extruded steadily.
