Concerned about duty/imort fees

So, I'm trying to see what I'm going to pay for duty/import fees (to the US) for the Prusa MK2. I understand that over $800 US and I'll have to pay it. I'm hoping to get this pre-built so it'll be over that amount.

I've never had to deal with that though, so what do I indicate for things like product category? There's really no category where this fits that I can find. Closest I can see is DIY Crafts & Tools / Airbrushes.

Also, what am I getting myself into with duty and import fees? Do I need to pick this up at a special place or is it still delivered to my home? Thanks.

From what i can look up , the Duty/import to the US will is 3.1% then you also have a merchandise processing fee ( MPF) of 0.3464% (minimum of 25$ though)

Source : http://www.dutycalculator.com/popular-import-items/import-duty-and-taxes-for-3d-printer/

Ive never had to deal with Duties (as the 4 printers i brought were in kits, but if im not mistaken UPS notifies you before delivery, and you can pay any duties /fees online.

Re: Concerned about duty/imort fees

The printer/kit should be duty free, filament though is not. When I got my kit this winter, the tariff code made it look like the whole shipment was filament, as I ordered an extra roll. UPS will charge a processing fee of ~$10, and then duty on those items that require it (which should only be the filament). You should be able to convince them that either the kit or assembled printer is nothing more than a collection on non-dutiable items (motors, switches, plastic parts, etc)...or at least I was able to do so.

It is an area of improvement for PRUSA shipping, and they should look at it a bit more carefully, plenty of software out there to help customers realize what they need to pay in advance.

Re: Concerned about duty/imort fees

I'm not sure how the math works out (Prusa seems to have removed the link with information on the import fees), but my order (the kit and a few rolls of filament) came to $994.83 and I had to pay about $45 to UPS. They delivered it to my door and took payment then, but there was an option to pay it before delivery and they'd presumably just leave the package.

It sucked for me, because I didn't plan for it (as the site then said that there was no import fee, regardless of order total). UPS held it for ransom until I could pay the fee, but Prusa more than made up for it. It would be nice if they put some clearer information on the site so people could plan.

Its really hard to do so since very one of 150+ countries usually has diffrent duties and tarrifs, unfortunately.

The front page of the store site has said "No import tax or fees to the US on orders Below $800" for as long as i can remember. Which is true, my 4 kits thus far that ive ordered (all between 600-750ish dollars) have all been duty free.

I'm sure that a large number of their orders are from a shorter list of countries, for which it shouldn't be terribly difficult to provide information for.

Before I contacted them after my surprise fee, the message at the top didn't mention an amount and suggested that there were no fees. They updated the site as a result. They had also added a link with more information at one point, but that seems to be gone now.

RE: Concerned about duty/imort fees

The U.S. appears to have a 5.8% import duty on filament under 3916.90.5000.

A few days after my order arrived I got a bill in the mail from FedEx for that, along with a $11 "advancement fee".

It would be good to update the table here which is wrong:

(The U.S. appears to have a 5.8% duty on filament under 3916.90.5000.
that page says "0" which is misleading.)
