Buying For A Gift; What Do I Need?
I am buying the Prusa i3 MK2 Kit for my son and know nothing about 3D printing. 😳 In addition to the kit, what else do I need?
Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you for your assistance! 🙂 [/size]

Hi Maureen
Initially, you will simply need the printer, which comes with 1Kg of PLA filament. With the Mk2 printer, there is no need for ABS Juice nor glue stick, although the latter may be required for certain prints, almost any glue stick will suffice.
There are maintenance items which will be required over time, including spare nozzles, but they are not necessary to get printing. I would suggest that the recipient of your gift would need to determine his requirements after several test prints.
Peter
EDIT: PLA filament is probably the best type for first time use.
Please note: I do not have any affiliation with Prusa Research. Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage…

PJR has you covered 🙂
I would totally recommend buying him at least a couple Kilo's of filament, in addiation to the free on that comes with 🙂
Trust me once he gets started, he will easily use up that kilo inside of a week or so, if he really puts his nose to the grindstone 🙂 PLA is the easiest to run with, so i would start him on that.
The filament that Prusa sells is good high quality stuff. If you are in the US and want to save on shipping, You can get great filament Amazon as well. (hatchbox and Esun are both good, inexpensive brands)

Thank you both so much for your help! That is exactly what I needed to know. I appreciate your assistance. 😀
Re: Buying For A Gift; What Do I Need?
Hi Maureen,
Definitely agreed with Peter and Erron. I would maybe add one or two additional PLA colors in the box so that he could play with multiple colors, but that's a nice to have, not a must have. Later, once he will get familiar with the process, it would be time to watch other filament.
Just be aware that 3D printing is not exactly a plug a play process, they are issues that may arise, that will need some understanding to go through. But this forum is here to help you overcome these.
And that's a hell of gift ! What a nice mother you are 🙂
I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.
Re: Buying For A Gift; What Do I Need?
It does make a wonderful gift! Mine was an Xmas present from my wife, she and a couple of her friends even put the thing together in secret for me! They had a few issues but Prusa sorted them out for her. I was so thrilled when she unveiled it! Your son will be ecstatic! 😀
