Second layer problems PLA

Hello everyone,

I have a Prusa MK2 that I upgraded with multimaterial.
Now I have lots of problems and have wasted lots of time trying to fix them...

The latest problem is that it seems to under extrude after the first layer?!
I have the latest firmware and Prusa Slicer, and I haven't tweaked them.
The Nozzle is the hardened steel version that handels tough materials.

After printing the first layer and starting on the second one it starts to click and is unable to provide enough material, thus failing.
For some reason this only happens with PLA at the moment. ABS works fine.

When changing material from ABS to PLA I set the nozzle temp on 255 so that the ABS gets pushed out more easy. Then I load the PLA again so that it really pushes the ABS out. When I print PLA I use the standard settings for PLA 215-210 C on nozzle and 55 C on bed. First layer works ok, but the second and so on under extrudes.
I have also tried 220 C in case it melts more and gets through easier, but no success...

In Slicer "Print Settings" I find this

Default Extrusion Width 0,45
First layer 0,42
Perimeters 0,45
External perimeters 0,45
Infill 0,45
Solid infill 0,45
Top solid infil 0,40

Is this OK? Those are the standard values after just importing the mk2mm_Slic3r_prusa3d_1_9_2.ini Bundle.

Is anyone having this problem or something similar?

The PLA is Prusa PLA (Silver) that I got when I bought the printer.
When I didn't have the Multimaterial thing it printed very good. But now I can't trust the printer what so ever, very disturbing!

One side question. Why does the bed change height before and after prints?!
I have taken the time to calibrate the bed so that the first layer is perfect on every part of the bed.
Z tuning is set on -260 in order for the first layer to work. BUT after the first print (for the day) I always need to change the Z tuning to around -190.
Why is this?

Check out the massive blockage thread in this forum. It seems your heatbreak blocks up.

Hi Nils,

Thank you for the reply.

I have checked the page but that is not really the problem for me.
I took apart the printer to see if it was assembled according to the page, and it was.

The interesting thing is that I made a new file on the using the same .STL but using the PrusaControl and used the standard PLA settings. Still using the same extruder (Extruder 4).
Now it is working without a problem?

So now I'm wondering if the Prusa Slicer and the PrusaControl have different settings? Is this so? Why?
And can I some how find this settings and apply them in Prusa Slicer?

*EDIT: Sorry! I was to quick. Now it is faling the same as before.

In the pictures you can also se the low quality of the print, outer layers are not even coming together.
The other pictures that you can see the print from above you can see in the top middle that it started under extruding. (Yes, maybe the infill was to low, but still, that shouldn't make the printer to under extrude...) *

In my experience, you need to lower the temperature from what you did on the MK2 with the MMU. I used 215/210 for PLA. Now use 205/200. For the very reason you are seeing.

I agree with aaron.s5. After my MMU upgrade, it seems that my temps need to be lower as well for PLA. Due to the limited choices with 'Control', I find myself modifying the gcode temps. Control seems to slice better than Slic3r PE MMU, which does not make sense to me. It is certainly easier to use, but needs a bit more options, especially with filaments.

PrusaControl is calling Slic3r Prusa Edition behind the scenes to get the object sliced. The difference may be in the settings though as PrusaControl generates a settings file for Slic3r PE from a hierarchical set of JSON files, while Slic3r works with a bunch of ini files. We hope that the two programs are configured the same. If it is not the case, than we may need to improve it.

FYI, you may export the G-code from Slic3r and from PrusaControl, extract the set of parameters from the end of the G-code and compare them, you will see the differences. Or you may load the G-code generated by PrusaControl (ok, it is generated by Slic3r PE called from PrusaControl) into Slic3r as a config file, and check the parameters in the Slic3r configuration pages to see any differences.

Hi!

Thanks for the replies.

I tried to change the temp to 205/200, but it was even worse, started clicking almost immediately.
So I tried the other way. I found out that if I keep 230 and above, then the PLA prints without a problem.
I tried 250 but it was to hot, and 225 was to low. So now i run 230 deg and get quite nice prints, they are not perfect, but much better than nothing at all.

See the pics. Material Prusa PLA.
Printed without infill.
The tree was set on 250, but had some black blobs, nothing you see here because they are inside.
The Tempel is printed on 230.

So it seems that the printer now has a mismatch regarding the temp in the software and the actual temp on the hotend.
Is this a firmware fault? If you look at the forums the are now full of this topics.
