Re: New MM upgrade with some extruder skipping...
I'm retracting at 15mm/s. I have not tweaked the preload, I'll d that next. As you mentioned earlier, in the 1.6 KISS the option for different suck/prime speeds has gone away and replaced with the more sophisticated preload. I've been getting great results on both direct drive and Bowden extruders with it.
I do see that the gold PLA is a bit stringy in this print. I usually print this one at 190°C. I'll change my material temp for that extruder (#1) on the next print. Otherwise, the print is looking really quite good.

Great, thanks.

Re: New MM upgrade with some extruder skipping...
Here's the finished snake. This was a long print - about 12 hours - due to a boneheaded slicer config. Sliced in the soon to be released KISS 1.6 (beta 1 release) and post processed with PJR's excellent post processor. The slicing mistake? I used KISS' new variable layer height feature which ended up creating .1mm layer heights for the entire snake (due to curved surfaces everywhere). And this is unsupported in PJR's post processor (but apparently it worked!). Sliced with 3 perimeters, .1mm layers for all intents and purposes, and 50% straight infill (this added a lot of time too).
The gold filament was stringy at 200°C. Next time I'll reduce its temperature to 195°C. I cleaned up the strings and finished with my polishing concoction and buffed to a light sheen. I will be blogging about my post processing techniques in the coming weeks.
Here's the belly of the snake - not a bad first layer.

Thank you for your kind comments and I am very please that you have your "new" printer up and running.
Have you tried 2.5 perimeters? Works nicely for me and helps reduce print time.

Re: New MM upgrade with some extruder skipping...
Yes, I have been using the KISS alphas since last year, I forget when this feature was implemented. I agree, it does a great job on curved vertical walls like the sides of this snake. I also just posted a blog about my first week with the MM Quad Kit. I attempted to describe the magic that's going on inside (as I currently understand it) with this diagram:

I think you will find that the top of the heat break is also tapered, so regular E3D V6 heat breaks are not quite the same. Also, the heat break is drilled from both ends during manufacture which can potentially leave an offset ridge. This has also been addressed.

Re: New MM upgrade with some extruder skipping...
Thanks Peter. I knew that something was modified in the V6 but I haven't taken mine apart to inspect yet.
