Hi,

i started printing with MM for 2 weeks. Got some nice multicolor PLA print.

Now, i would like to use different material on the same print. Like ABS + PET, or give a try with PVA as well. As PVA and PET (or ABS) has a really different temperature, i wonder if we can set a different temperature on each extruder/material ❓

It could change temp during the wipe tower, or making a pause on the wipe tower ❓

Materials with vastly different print temperatures cannot be printed at the same time. But this is theoretical as printing ABS and PLA at the same time isn’t a good idea anyways because of vastly different heatbed temperatures. Small temperature changes can be done during printing the smart tower.

I am new to the 3d printing world. I don't even have a printer yet. However, I've been reading and watching videos about it enough to where I think I understand the basics.

With that in mind, I am wondering about the relationship between extrusion temperature and bed temperature. The following is how I understand things.

The bed temp is set to a value that would facilitate adhesion of the material being printed. As such it is related to that material but that is where it stops. Theoretically, at high enough leyers, the bed temperature could be set to the appropriate value for one material, while the extruder temp could be for a completely different material. The temp creep from the bed into the part should not be extending that far up. I don't know what that means in terms of layers but I would think that ABS and PLA could be printed together given that they don't mix below that layer threshold.

Regardless of whether my understanding above is correct or not, Peter's quote is somewhat discouraging. It makes the multi-material upgrade sound more like multi-color rather than multi-material.

This is what Josef stated when the MMU was announced. However, things have changed somewhat; I really don' know how Slic3r handles this situation, I do know that KISS + my post-processor can handle 30 degree filament temperature differences, maybe more

You have to be careful where you put the temp changes; you also should be aware that you need to avoid M109 in favour of M104 wherever possible. There will be nozzle ooze during a M109

Hi,

i made a ABS / PETG print with 250 / 230 °C, and the temperature changes were fine during the wipe tower. It might have time for a 30 + °C difference.

Slic3r : Adjust your different materials temperatures in the "Filament setting" and it will automatically change during the wipe tower printing.

So everything seems set already 😳

I'm trying a ASA (230°C) and PVA (195°C°). I'll let you know.

Edit : Yep, M104 a lot smoother !

Hi !

Some news on mixing materials :

ASA & PVA was not a success, even if i don't think it comes from temperature changes which tend to happen fast during wipe tower.

Even if the temperature changing automatically as set in Slic3r, it happens quite often that the print fail, no filament being extruded at all...I'm not sure it comes from temperature or some thing else.

I try Primaselect PVA as recommended, and it can have difficulty printing "bridges" on the wipe tower, making a big mess...

I waiting for HIPS to give a try.

Just started to test PrimaSelect PVA+ myself.

Printing at 195, unloading at 190. The problem is that you need to start the purging at 200 and increase quickly to 5 degrees more than the other filament printing temp, before finishing the purge. Which is all fine when printing PLA, but may not be possible for other filaments.

The problem with M109 is that you cannot keep the nozzle moving during heating. If only there was a "LOOP" command defined within G-code...

Move nozzle back
UNTIL TEMP = REQD_TEMP
