Anyway to upgrade from MMU1 to MMU2 now that the kit is no longer available?

Hi All,

Is there any way to upgrade from the MMU1 to MMU2 now that the past upgrade kit has been taken down from the Prusa shop? I wish I would have picked it up when it was available as it was only $150 for the upgrade kit for those with existing MMU1's. Now it seems the only way is to buy the full MMU2 upgrade kit is at twice the price ($300) and support can't offer the previous discount that was available for the MMU1 to MMU2 kit.

My MMU1 seems to have really gone down hill lately and is constantly jamming during prints due to retraction settings needed for the bowden extruder system. I get horrible prints if i shorten the retraction settings though so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. 😫 😖 😪

Just for interest, could you please try the following link, whilst logged in, to the eShop
https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/upgrades/185-multi-material-upgrade-kit-from-mk2-mmu-to-mk25smk3s-mmu2s.html

I typically print with 2mm retraction in the mmuv1.  have you replaced the extruder liner PTFE recently?

have you dehydrated your filament recently?

Look for a disenchanted mmu2 owner and see if you can snag an unloved MMU2.

The MMU1 to MMU2 upgrade used three extruder motors off the MMU1  to power the Mk2.5 extruder, the MMU2 Idler drum  and the filament feed rollers (there was a 5mm to 5mm shaft coupler to provide the longer shaft, needed for the five filament feed hobbed gears).
also the mmu1 to mmu2 upgrade used a different data cable and a piggyback power cable
It woukd be easier to take the power directly from the PSU connectors, there are three pairs of 12 voly connectors of which two pairs are normally in use on a mk2 printer.    the data cable

you will also need this assembly guide, note the differences for the Mk2.5  printer connections

RE: Anyway to upgrade from MMU1 to MMU2 now that the kit is no longer available?

Hi Joan,

I'm kind of out date on all this. Maybe you can help me. I've recently taken my printer out of  storage,(MK2S) which i purchased  years ago.  Also, the MMU1 which has not been installed. Ive noticed my models are no longer supported at the eshop.  My questions are:

What would be the latest i can upgrade my printer to? is it the 2.5s+?

Can i also upgrade the mmu1 to and mmu2?

is it pOssible to source parts?

Any help, or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Anyway to upgrade from MMU1 to MMU2 now that the kit is no longer available?

There was a 2.5. upgrade. Ages ago

It brought filament sensor MK3 type extruder new fans and 12 volt mk52 heated with a removable build plate.

Kits no longer available. But parts may be still available. I have seen 12 volt mk52 beds on AliExpress and eBay.

Mmu1 to mmu2 upgrade. Pretty much only used two of the mmu1 motors

I was still using my mmu1 motors when I went up to mmu3...

The mmu2 on MK2 had a different set of data and power cables to the MK3...

I don't know if these are available.

Hi Joan,

Thank you for your helpful reply!

Just to clarify: when you upgraded to the 12V MK52 bed with the removable build plate, were you still using your MMU1 at that time? If so, did the magnetic bed work well with the MMU1 setup?

I'm considering doing the same upgrade on my MK2S with MMU1 and would love to know if you had any issues or if everything worked smoothly. Any pros or cons you experienced would be really helpful.

Thanks again! —Omar

My Mk2 MMU1 still has the 12volt mk52 heatbed,
It will not do XYZ calibration because the mk52 sense spots are in different locations.... so I don't try that test... just rely on the printer being good before fitting the new heatbed.
the Pinda has no problems mesh bed levelling on my printer...
I haven't looked but I think I have the latest Mk2/MMU1 firmware!

Hi Joan,

Thanks so much for the explanation!

That’s very helpful to know about the XYZ calibration not working with the MK52 due to the sensor spots. I usually rely on my printer being well-tuned too, so I guess I could manage without that test.

Glad to hear mesh bed leveling still works properly with the PINDA!

Thanks again for sharing your experience—really appreciate it!
