Y motor rotates only in one direction

Since yesterday I saw that Y motor rotates only in single direction but not the other (towards the switch). Bearings are fine, I also tested without any load. It just faintly clicks when I try to rotate it (manually) to that direction.

I also noticed that the Y endstop switch holder is broken - not sure when it happened but probably very recently or if that is related but it might be.

Anyway, what else can I try? At this point I assume the problem with stepper motor itself, since wiring should be fine (it rotates just fine in one direction). Should I look for a replacement and where?

Thanks

Stepper should be fine. The way it works it will not rotate in either direction if the wiring is bad.

Sounds like your endstop is permanently stuck "on" and the printer won't move in that direction because it keeps thinking it has hit the limit.

That sounds like a good explanation. I'll definitely check the switch.

@vintagepc

I turns out that you were partially right. It isn't stepper. But it isn't the switch either. It's the controller board. I switched X and Y motors to find out that.

Thanks for help.

I guess I have to contact Prusa for a spare one now.

Fair enough.. Switch was the most obvious given you'd noticed some damage to that area 🙂

Good to hear you figured it out - but still very strange unless the board itself has shorted the switch contacts somehow; I can't think of any reason at the electronics level that is not software-related that would cause this kind of failure. (If the direction control to the driver was stuck the motor would continue to move "forward" regardless of the direction selected, as opposed to flat out refusing to move.)
