Front print fan starts giving noises

Hi there,

I recently took over an MK2S from a good friend (who needed the space for an MK3 ;)) to start my journey into 3D printing. I am now noticing that the front print fan starts giving noises like an upcoming inbalance. At some point I would expect having to exchange that fan (denoted as "5015 print fan" in the assembly manual) and was wondering whether you already went through this exercise - especially having an advice on how to exchange it without having to dismount the whole extruder.

My first idea would have been to cut the fan wires at some point, exchange the fan and solder the two pairs of wires. What do you think?

Kind regards,
Heinz

My fan started making noise to. When warm the noise stopted. So the (sliding) bearing was dry. Just remove the sticker on the back of the fan and lubricate it with thin oil (just one drop will do). Be carefull not to damage the wires.

Let me here if that solved your problem.

My Fan on the MK2 also makes a loud rattling noise for about 30 sec after starting before it vanishes.

Check for strands of filament inside the fan blades, pluck them out with your tweezers.

@Tobias
That was the bearing in my case. If not treated, the bearing will grow worse and finally, the fan has to be replaced.
After the drop of oil, the fan stays quiet

That's exactly the behaviour I am experiencing. When just waiting long enough the noise stops. So that sounds like a very promising approach, thanks for this.

Now I simply need to find a time slot in my son's endless printing activities 😉 and then I will give it a go ...

At the rear side of the fan is a sticker in the middle. Carefully remove it (then you can reuse it, or use other peace of "duck" tape) for resealing when done.

Thanks a lot Frans. For the time being - meaning that I will have an eye and ear on it - the fan is working like a charm again 🙂

One thing to note is that I had to use a reasonable drop of oil. Initially I apparently was a bit greedy and used only a tiny drop - which proved to not be enough. So I needed to add a slightly bigger drop (which in sum might have been half a tear drop) and now it works well.
