Extruder body broke mid print
Hello all,
I am having a very bad day today.
Let me tell you how all of this began:
Day before yesterday, the printer was working fine, producing amazing quality results. Yesterday, all of a sudden, the extruder would crash into the heatbed during calibration before print.
Okay, I chatted with the support who recommended that I drop the PINDA sensor slightly and then recalibrate. I got around to doing it today; keeping in mind that the top of the sensor does not drop below the hook.
I re ran the calibrationXYZ and the G code; adjusted the Z height and all looked fine. I started on a long print; and three hours into the print, the extruder body broke and the extruder practically ate the print.
I have attached the pictures of both the print and the broken extruder body.
I am at my wits end now and would really like some insight.
On a seperate note, any ideas how to prevent this from happening in the future is really welcome.

Yes, the probe holder is badly damaged, which was probably also the cause of your initial crash.
No idea how it happened unless the probe was initially over-tightened or it hit something at some point.
Are you able to patch it up to get one more print? If you are, you will need to print a replacement part (PLA would be OK) and then swap the damaged part for the printed replacement.. if necessary, you can use superglue or even resin to patch the probe holder.
If you can get the probe in place so it won't move, try and get it so it is between 0.5 and 1mm higher than the nozzle. Hi,
I think that you had some warping on this print and that it catched the probe, and maybe the part holding the probe was initilly a bit overtighten and then a bit weak. I did the same, I had to reprint this part. Using a washer for the below bold may help to spread the pression on a wider area and reduce this risk.
Since this part is made of ABS, you can try to fix it with acetone, and will be surprise how strongly it can fix it.
To minimize the risk that the probe catch prints, I made a protector (here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1617374 ) and PR made also one (here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Orignal-Prusa-i3/blob/MK2/Printed-Parts/stl/PINDA_protector.stl )
And for once I disagree with Peter 😉 Printing this part in PLA is probably a bad idea as it hold the extruder. The cold part of the extruder, but it remains an extruder. Better Use ABS for that.

I will try to patch it up tomorrow; I will let you know how it goes.
On a side note, I have whipped a 'PINDA' alignment jig - Can someone please verify if this will work?
basically, you place this on the cold hotend - regardless of the Z height you are at or, even when assembling the extruder and then screw the PINDA sensor in place. I have placed the PINDA sensor 0.8 mm above the Nozze tip.

Hello all,
I will attempt to fix the broken part with Acetone and print a replacement part.
What should my infill setting be? 25%?
Also, will Acetone dissolve the threadlocker that I have applied on the PINDA probe?

The exact same thing just happened to me, and I am NOT a happy camper right now. I Had just gotten my printer working again after a blockage, and now this broken PINDAR seat. So I'm now dead in the water for the foreseeable future. I am seriously beginning to regret my decision to buy a machine made with printed parts. 🙁

The exact same thing just happened to me, and I am NOT a happy camper right now. I Had just gotten my printer working again after a blockage, and now this broken PINDAR seat. So I'm now dead in the water for the foreseeable future. I am seriously beginning to regret my decision to buy a machine made with printed parts. 🙁
That is why the first thing i did when getting my new printers (4 in total) is to print a replacement set of parts for each printer, (though to note, i have yet to need a single one) If you are unable to print a replacement one, and are in the US, let me know what piece you need and i can print and ship you a new one for just the cost of shipping.

I appreciate the offer. I am kind of mulling the situation over today, and I think I may try patching the part with some acetone and bracing and seeing if I can recover at all. (I just want to make sure I don't do something to further damage the machine. Last night I freaked out because the machine tried to calibrate at the beginning of a print, and that's when I found out the bracket holding the PINDAR in was broken--the extruder carriage was slamming down into the first couple of calibration points before the calibration failed and it halted.) I now see that some folks have made little guards for the probe, so I think I had better print some of those out as well.
I shall live to print again.

it's probably better to use a kind of spring clamp, secured in postition, to maintain the parts during the gluing process.
Dismantling this part is a mess, there are many things to remove :/

I agree. Acetone bonding worked fine for me... But, there is still a little flex to the PINDA holder. I asked a friend to reprint the entire body for me.
